NAYRT

Taming the bad boy is a power fantasy.

Possibly somewhat but definitely not in a simple or straightforward way

It is really directly, though. The fantasy is: you are such an amazing person in every respect that someone who loves you is willing to change fundamental aspects of their personality just to please you. You say, "stop doing that," and he does.

I mostly see your point anon, but in terms of fiction, especially fanfic, I think a lot of authors want to convey what you're saying but skip over other elements that can assist the change in someone. I love a badboy redemption but I think the "love of another, better person" is one major element of it and other things have to happen that change their world view. Usually because the love interest has opened their mind to that possibility or they have a character defining moment that floors them.

Being (very) charitable I think a lot of hate for this fantasy comes from people reading or watching stuff that doesn't stick the landing. Of course there's also the people who can't accept reality and fantasy are separate things for many of us, but I do think there's some pushback because fantasy itself is very immediate "I want it now" - whereas if you share your work based on your wish fulfilment (fanfic for example) with other people and they perceive there isn't enough character development it leads to frustration. Canon often does the "want it now" thing as well to be fair.

Second-hand power (power that exists purely through one's ability to make other people want to comply) is a complex thing. You only continue to have it so long as people continue to choose to let you have it. It's very tenuous.

A second-hand power fantasy is not not a power fantasy, but it's...definitely complicated.
