That moment affected me more than anything else in the entire series, especially how it was just so casually thrown in there after all the wonderful backstory we'd gotten with Lupin and Tonks...well, moreso Lupin.

I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I can't imagine reading that, having been in your situation. :(

101-Maybe you already are!

110-I don't see why associating one of the four nations with things in the west would make you brainwashed. Zuko's speech about the Fire Nation in DoBS certainly made me think of the US--even if I didn't see him as white. Lots of countries of behaved that way throughout history. I don't think you were necessarily seeing white as the default based on what you're saying here about it.

112-Your friend sounds like she's being really obnoxious and condescending about her silly ship! I can get why you'd expect a bad reaction from her if you posted it, though.

122-That picture is the best serious!Mpreg ever.

144-I still have mine!

165-Why not give her whatever your pov on actual Scientology is if she's getting things wrong about it? Because I have to admit, I'm with the other side on this one. I think that actor was raised in it and that seems like it would suck to me.

128. "Even in fandom?" Dude, there's hate on women's bodies (all types) everywhere. Personally, I think it's bullshit and it's not anyone' place to comment on anyone else's body, fat or thin or whatthefuckever, because the fact of the matter is you don't know shit about them and you can't tell someone's health just by looking at them. There are so many things that factor into someone's appearance, and people need to stop judging women's body as if it's open for debate whether or not they're healthy.

tl;dr: Can we please stop talking about strangers' bodies?? Jesus Christ.

Your idea is interesting, but I don't agree the Fire Nation is supposed to be white because of the stuff listed in your post. As others pointed out imperialism, industrialization all happened in Asian cultures too. The characters have Asian features. If they wanted them to be white European imperialism based they would of looked it. Asians can also be pale skinned too.

Also, I see Inuits as closer to Asians than whites. If for example they make a fantasy world influenced by the Incas or some other civilization, it would make more sense to have some of the cast be Asians over whites, since their physical features more closely resemble Incans than whites would.

It doesn't make sense for the actors to not look like the characters. It's like Hollywood making a live action Afro Samurai and giving it to a white or other ethnicity actor. It wouldn't be Afro Samurai anymore, it would just be a movie using the story.

Also I think the problem with the casting is that the main characters are white in an Asian influenced world. Nobody else in that world would be looking like them. For all we know most of the Fire Nation will not be white but just the main players from the FN. That will just look odd, not to mention, are there no kid actors that aren't white in Hollywood? They couldn't find one actor that wasn't white out of all the million kids in this nation. They can't tell there isn't some willing Indian or Asian kid out there who would fit Katara or anyone else and can act to be found in the whole of the US?

Re: 110

[identity profile] hafl.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly this. Having white actors for lead characters, who aren't white? Fire Nation being white could be defended, but Aang and Katara could not. (And "Not-white hero and heroine would confuse the kids." or "Kids wouldn't watch a movie without white leads." is never a defense.

Having a completely white cast with a token Asian would be more stupid. And only having Sokka as the token with Katara still being white would be more stupid than that.

165: Did it ever occur to you that she got her opinion based on her knowledge of the religion and not from South Park? Because I have to admit, I don't have much respect for scientologists because of their stance on psychological disorders, not because of anything on South Park. Maybe your friend is the same way.

152

[identity profile] atanih88.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I too think uniforms are hot but, I don't understand this one at all. I couldn't get past the swastika. I'm not trying to be rude here, everyone has their own tastes and I am aware that you are just talking about the uniforms and that you're not supporting what they did in any way, but I assure you that if you go through other history books that you will find other uniforms to your taste. Also you said I have a nazi fetish and then went on to explain why: snazzy uniforms and dominance.

I agree snazzy uniforms are hot
Dominance can also be hot

These things also exist outside of anything connected to Nazi's, so I have to wonder since the things you find hot exist outside of a 'nazi fetish'.

God this is sounding like a personal attack. I don't mean it to be. But if it really is a Nazi fetish you have, I don't understand that at all.

Re: 152

[identity profile] toxictattoo.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. There is a difference between having a Nazi uniform fetish and a Nazi fetish.

I immediately lose all respect for anyone if they are scientologists, and this has NOTHING to do with south park. They support child abuse, slavery and murder financially. Either knowingly, or unknowingly because they don't have the balls to look it up online.

It just pisses me off when people assume that the only problem people have with scientology is "lol, aliens".

Sometimes I feel that me and like one or two others are the only people actively looking forward to/interested to see what they'll do with her.

ETA: Also I am really, really tired of "Fans" calling "Mary sue" on female characters for... being... in a series. Yeah, I'm one of those people, I admit, who sees unconscious misogyny in deciding ahead of time that they're going to be a Special Snowflake With No Plot Purpose Just Stuck In Because Omg You Guys I See Myself As Her! It makes me want to shoop pink bows and sparkles on Nomura, because that's about as believable. Yes, yes, a new female character is going to be in the series. Aren't we Axel/Roxas shippers also, uh, people who ended up falling for new characters at some point? Shokku.

Nothing in the secret indicates that Xion will be a Mary Sue. No one can know that until the game comes out. It's possible that her role is smaller than the trailers would lead one to believe.

My personal opinion is that her existence is not so much annoying as unnecessary, and yet it will produce wank. Boy!Xion would be just as unnecessary, but probably well-liked, and the thought of that gives me a bigger headache.

101) Fandom is shallow. It's all about the squee -- the narrow, narrow pigeon-holed squee -- and ephemeral as all hell. Sometimes friendships spring from them, but lasting impact on the fandom itself? -- not so much. Even BNFs pass into obscurity amazingly quickly once they leave (unless they do something absurdly wanky). It's no reflection on you if you aren't remembered, don't judge yourself that way. The important thing is not will you be remembered by a group of strangers, but rather are you being supportive of your real friends. If you are, they will still be with you when you switch fandoms.

106) Repeat as a mantra: I can enjoy a film/book/manga/etc without the permission of others. Now go watch the cool movie, and who cares what the sticks fandom might have up its collective asses. Besides, as someone who bought and enjoyed the graphic novel as individual comics when it first came out -- the movie does look cool. Your brother is just being a dick.

110) I think the parable falls apart as soon as you start assigning historical nations to the four tribes. Fire nation aren't caucasion. Their hair, clothes, culture, features aren't particularly western. They are fire nation, an imaginary race from an imaginary world.

112) Post it, and distance yourself from that friend. She's being an ass and that kind of behavior shouldn't be rewarded with respect.

116) I'm well respected as a fan fic and an original fic writer-- and I enjoy my personal!sues daily. I just keep them to myself. <3 (No one would get how truly sparkly wonderful they are anyway.)

122) Oh but that's the best kind. When it's all about the horror and OMG get this parasite out of me. Serious crack is the best crack.

126) He looks six... D:

143) So this is what it looks like when you rape canon with a candy-cane.

148) Sadly, they don't teach this in Writing 101 either.

165) Scientology crosses the line with me too. I don't mind their philosophy -- they can believe what they like -- but the church itself has crossed the line with it's criminal mistreatment of children and the mentally ill and anyone who dares disagree with them. Their tactics are evil and they prey on their own in dispicable ways. The sooner they are disbanded and their leaders sent to jail, the better.

106. FUCK ELITISTS IN THE EAR. Go see it! :)

112. If she can't respect your taste in pairings, she's the one who's kind of childish, not you.

118. Hmm, I have read that female arousal does not necessarily correlate with female sexual orientation, so...that fantasy doesn't necessarily mean that you're not straight, perhaps? I don't know what I'm talking about, though, TBH.

This article's old, but it's interesting:

126. LOLOLOL. Oh, my childhood!

128. I'm the same. I can't help how I was born; my parents are both twigs, too. And we're all healthy. End of story.

143. Wait, you're not implying that the innocent stuff disturbs you MORE than the Nazi-themed porn/bondage/guro/actual shota, are you? Or does it all disturb in roughly equal amounts? Because while I can understand how the innocent stuff may be creepy in its own way, there's South Park fanart that's FAR more fucked up.

I love most of the fanart, though; my brain is inexplicably fascinated by different artists' interpretations of an art style that is so simple to begin with. I admit that excessively bishified/anime-ish stuff
can be kinda fail, though. However, the cardinal sins are: skinny Cartman and, to a lesser extent, Jewfro-less Kyle.
