(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)Right! Like, FF.net is close to 23 years old! It has been around a long time and has all the pre-2008 fandoms. (And if it closes down soon, as the rumors are flying it will, I wouldn't be surprised.) I know DBZ had Yahoo Groups mailing lists for different pairings at that time. Not all the fic made it to FF.net due to the "No NC-17" thing.
there was no real HUB in the early internet for fic. FF.net was doing okay in 2001, gaining traction. Maybe you found an angelfire webring that had all these really neat character shrines with fic and you hoped it might make it to FF.net in case they shut down. And yeah... I'm not 100% sure I miss it. I like AO3's layout and tagging system etc. But some of the individuality of things is gone and that's a tad saddening.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)This rumor has been flying around for at least 5 years (if not more.) Apparently, though it has gotten to the point where you can't recover your email/password, the code has broken down that much. So, there are posts going "Grab your fic! Grab your friend's fics! Save EVERYTHING."
There is no official reports about ff.net closing. It's no one is keeping the code up. And every time people try to ask questions, they can't get anyone to respond.
So yeah, it just may go down one day and we'll never know what happened. Or it will go on for another 20 years without any major code updates gradually losing people to AO3. Who knows. Not me.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)I tried resetting my password last time I saw a panicked post about it going round tumblr a few weeks ago, and it worked then. And if nobody is keeping the code up, then who posts all the time on their official twitter with news about the site and updates their app?
I mean, you absolutely SHOULD grab anything you might want to re-read and have a back-up of your own fic, no matter what site it's on (though a recent update to ffnet made it harder to download stuff from there), I just don't see any particular reason to panic about it going down soon.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-04 01:01 am (UTC)(link)Given how old the site is, that's why I said I wouldn't be surprised.
But yeah, rumors are just that rumors. And they pop up every few years. If someone is on twitter posting stuff about the news and the app, that's good! Maybe it will be around longer. And maybe there was just a password glitch that day. I'd be sad to see it go because it's been such a huge internet staple over the years.
Right. Always back up your fic! And download fic you like! (I still have fic I took down from ff.net ages ago. So, I'm good there.) Because you never know if the creator is going to take it down! Or lock it to private (say on AO3.)
