This is true, in the sense that I have literally never seen cringe-worthy gifted fanart that looked like the person had spent a lot of time and effort on it. I've seen fanart that wasn't very good but that clearly had a lot of effort put into it, and while it didn't make me like the art, I also didn't cringe and get second-hand embarrassment either.

The embarrassing stuff always looks like the person spent about twenty minutes on it.

I think that's true for the most part, but having done art for a fic before, I did realize that I can spend an entire day tweaking a kind of shitty drawing.

I ended up making two digital manips and a musical fanmix instead. I guess it was probably okay, but passable art is harder than it looks. (There weren't enough signups so the person wouldn't have been guaranteed art if I hadn't offered to at the last minute.)
