Kind of based on 1

Do you like audiobooks? I've listened to a few but I tend to have a hard time paying attention.

Re: Kind of based on 1

(Anonymous) 2026-05-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
They stress me tf out because I have an auditory processing disorder. I *have* listened to audiobooks in the car with other people and if it was a book I've read before it would be fine, stress-wise, but we finally had to just make a no-audiobooks-on-family-car-trips rule after one where the audiobook part stressed out half the people in the car and the subject matter stressed out one person who COULD follow it but did not want to.

I don't like them. But my vision is rapidly deteriorating so. :(

I've listened to some and they're really hit and miss for me. I'm extremely particular about voices and if I dislike the voice, the accent or the way the narrator does the character voices bothers me even a little I'm out.

They're good to fall asleep to, if the reader has a soothing voice.Since I can't sit up for long, I appreciate that quality in them. I like the Project Hail Mary audiobook so, so much, but it's not one for drifting off to.

I like them under very specific conditions apparently: 1) I'm on a mode of transportation that doesn't allow me to read or write and have a long period of uninterrupted time to actually pay attention, and 2) it's a first person narrative with a story and voice I enjoy, so that it ends up feeling more like a friend telling a story than a lecture (I can't stand being talked at but I love an interesting story)

My usual go-tos are The Murderbot Diaries, because they fit nicely into my usual long bus trips, and the Bloody Jack series, which I've loved since I was a kid and has a WONDERFUL reader who sounds exactly like Jacky should, even in her singing voice.

I love audiobooks. I like to listen to them while I work, though they're very hit or miss depending on the voice.

If it's a book I haven't read or listened to before: I like them when I am exercising. It's the perfect time for me, because I am physically doing something that doesn't require any thought, and so my mind can be occupied by the audiobook while my body is occupied while exercising. Similarly, when I'm doing chores or something else that doesn't need focus.

If it's a familiar story: I listen to them at night when I have trouble sleeping, and it lulls me to sleep. I'm really selective about them though. If it's a new book I'll stay awake listening to it so it has to be something I'm familiar with. The narrator has to be good (usually female) and there can't be parts of shouting or screaming.

I love audiobooks, but I'm exceptionally picky with them. Microphone quality has to be good, certain accents and lisps are immediate no-gos, and I can and will drop a book if someone mispronounces certain words consistently.

The original How to Train Your Dragon audiobooks, narrated by David Tennant, are probably the only ones I've actually listened to and are fantastic.

I have aphantasia and have a hard time imagining when I read books, not to mention I'll also mentally blank and then suddenly be somewhere in the next chapter or an audiobook, so have to skip back, much like I did when I was a voracious reader when I was younger. There's a reason why I listen to podcasts only.

No, I can't focus on them and retain any information. ;o;

Re: Kind of based on 1

(Anonymous) 2026-05-23 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes yes, some of them no.
My most strange gripe with them - when audio version leaves too many "he said she said". Especially if you have several voice actors. YES I FUCKING HEAR THAT HE SAID

Re: Kind of based on 1

(Anonymous) 2026-05-23 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't been a fan of audiobooks, but I have issues with listening to podcasts and I'm not a fan of audiobooks where there's just one person reading all the voices. Flashbacks to being a kid and hearing some adult man trying to sound like a prepubescent female character and giving me a giant ick.

I might be able to do an audiobook if a specific actor I really liked to listen to was the main voice.

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2026-05-22 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing this weekend?

It is a three day weekend for me. My sister, BIL, and I will be gaming and watching a couple of movies that recently released. Also going to push myself to finish my gnome guy so I can start something new.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Going to see I LOVE BOOSTERS at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I don't see movies in the theater very often, but I want to support Boots Riley and that awesome cast.

Good luck with the gnome guy! Would love to see a finished pic if you're inclined!

Taking my mom out for a belated mother's day coffee date, hopefully! We'll go to the farmer's market, then we'll pack up some pastries and some frozen peas, I'll buy coffee (well... I'll transfer her the money, she's got the loyalty program account at a local coffee kiosk and usually pays through their app), and we'll go look for some ducks. We'll eat donuts, the ducks will eat frozen peas, and we'll enjoy a little beautiful weather, claim a picnic bench by the creek, and then we'll probably poke around a yarn store after.

It's a long holiday weekend where I live and its supposed to get super hot so I'd like to just veg out and play video games but my best friend needs a pick-me-up so I'll probably go on a day trip with her and Monday (still a holiday) I'll help my mother prepare stuff for some guests they have over in the evening.

Vent and a question I guess

(Anonymous) 2026-05-23 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I had this friend at uni who is trying to reconnect. This journey is already quite... interesting. But yesterday she annoyed the hell out of me.
We have been talking about activity I do and she asked if she can tag along since she is interested. I said yeah, sure. Now I am regretting everything.
She asked if I want to spend time afterwards. I said that no, I can't do it this weekend and a next one because I have plans afterwards, but I am open to spending time in two weeks time. And she started asking what my plans are after making fun that I need so much planning around. And that rubs me the wrong way so much. Why the fuck do you care about my plans? I am not inviting you.
And idk. Is this weird? I tend to be secretive. Or it was a rude question? Frankly I just can't be bothered telling all of my schedule.
Also we are adults. Why do you find it strange that I have fully planned weekends?
