I actually agree. Much as Bella annoys me, I would probably have emotional problems if my boyfriend left me. There are plenty of things to criticize about Twilight without saying she should have just gotten over it.

While I can understand breaking down and crying because a man left you, there's a difference between being heartbroken and trying to kill yourself.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who has had suicidal depression, I will have to agree to disagree on with you on that point. It does happen, and breakups can trigger it.

[identity profile] transitorial.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It does happen, and I don't mean to say you're wrong at all. My problem is that she follows up this state by leaping into another relationship, with someone who (at least theoretically) genuinely cares about her.

(I say theoretically because apparently SMeyer has confirmed that Jacob was always attracted to the egg that would become Renesmee, which I find deeply disturbing.)

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It is pretty fucked up, and there are a lot of things to poke fun at or criticize (openly manipulating a guy to make the ex jealous, trying to get attacked by bikers so that she'd see Ed's disembodied head, etc.) I just don't think shaming the notion of being depressed post-breakup is the right way to go about it.

[identity profile] amyrat151.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Shaming doesn't come just from Bella being depressed after Edward left her, it comes from the fact that it's treated as the highest form of love. Bella and Edward's relationship is Better Than Any of Yours, don't you know. Bella and Edward are the most amazing couple ever since they have no interests outside of one another and all of their obligations and loyalties, including those to their families, are continually pushed away, written off, and actively ignored for the whole of the series. That's why people find Bella's depression so repulsive. They relationship is the sickest kind of love and Bella martyrs herself for it.

What the everlasting fuck goes on in that woman's mind, for fuck's sake??

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah seriously what the fucking fuck??

Does this also mean he was also attracted to Edward coz of the sperm?

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Great. After not giving Edward/Jacob so much as a passing thought before, now I ship it.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know whether to check her into an institution or slap her on the back and give her a drink, if only for the fact her ideas are so fucking stupid they're hilarious at times.

.....

And once again, I can't decide between icons, and therefore will insert all three candidates:

The problem with Bella is that she doesn't have suicidal depression; her reaction is portrayed as the normal response for a young woman whose boyfriend breaks up with her.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This. The fact that she's depressed over Edward leaving isn't shown as being suicidal depression or something that should be taken care of or treated; it's shown as being OK because she misses her "true love." Ugh this book.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that she never tried to kill herself. That's a widely spread false fact that everyone who never read the book believes is true.. Bella did suicidal things for the rush of it but never actually did anything with the express intent of dying. OF COURSE that's just as fucked up, but it's still not deliberately trying to kill herself over her relationship. Get your facts straight and your argument will hold more water.

[identity profile] transitorial.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I have read them, actually. It's unfair to pass judgment on something when you don't have facts to back yourself up.

My wording gives the wrong idea. I admit I fucked up there. I just feel that putting herself in a dangerous position, like she did with the bikers, was her way of pushing herself to hurt or worse. Like you said, she did it for the rush of it. That is what bothers me - I felt Meyer did a very poor job of suggesting that she was doing so as some sort of coping mechanism - to me, she just wanted the adrenaline.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Okay, yes, I definitely get that. Sorry to be all nasty and accusative. I'm just so sick of reading otherwise well-reasoned arguments that include that false fact as absolute truth.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Trying to kill oneself does not make someone a bad person or worthy of mockery.

[identity profile] transitorial.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that it makes what I said any better, but I'd like it to be known that I honestly never meant to imply either of those things.

I've wanted to kill myself before, so badly that I had to seek help before I did something that would hurt the people around me. My problem with Bella is that she somehow manages to be selfish even while building her world around a single person. Then, when that person leaves her, she turns to someone else as a coping mechanism, only to drop THAT person once she's getting what she wants again. That was cruel to Jacob, whatever his reasons for falling for her, and that bothered me deeply - and I don't even LIKE his character.

No one's being all ~lol depression just get over it~ in this meme. They're saying that Twilight/Bella is written TERRIBLY. That's the point.
