I don't hate the kids being named after dead people but I think it's...I don't know, not really "cheesy" (but yeah, kind of), but it just didn't tug at my heartstrings or whatever it was meant to do. It borderlined on narmy for me, but I'm not sure why.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
For me it was narmy because James in particular acted exactly like we'd seen his namesake act.

Arnold is not that bad of a name :/

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with Arnold? I don't mind the kids being named in honor of the dead. I see nothing wrong it personally, but I can see where other people would be "Dude... All of them? WTH?"

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's pretty much my issue. All of them just seems like lazy writing.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Since when is "Arnold" a weird name? That said, the names of her kids are pretty weird sounding but only if you say their full names. Albus Potter sounds fine, but Albus Severus Potter sounds horrible! But his nickname is Al, so it's all good.

Anyway, I never had a problem with them being named after dead people. I can get why some people would find it creepy or cheesy... I think maybe it's a cultural thing, IDK.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-31 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's weird to see children being named after dead people, but I just found it weird that all of the children's first and middle names are after dead people (aside from the middle name "luna") and that Harry actually used "Severus" as a middle name (I know he did some heroic stuff, but the dude was still a grade A asshole who made Harry miserable. I get still wanting to honor him anyway, but actually naming your kid after him? not to mention that snape probably would have hated that)

I want you, OP, to read your own secret again. You're comparing pet names to those intended for humans. Pet names. Names for people. Not the same thing.

But if you wanna play it like that... Fine. Ginny was twelve or thirteen when she named "Pigwidgeon". As for Arnold; it isn't an unusual name, and hardly the worst when it comes to the wizarding world's list of names.
And quite frankly, you can't make a bad name good by comparing it to another bad name. Both are just as crap.

What annoys me most, is that the names represent people important to Harry, not Ginny (with the exception of Luna - which happens to be a second name). It doesn't take a genius to realize Ginny took a backseat with this.
But that's only half of what annoys me with the way the kids were named. Honor dead people all you like, but it annoys me how it's implied these dead people live on as some sort of reincarnations (not literally, but figuratively) because, d'uh, if you were named after a certain person, you should act and be like that person ~because your name says so~.

IMO Albus Severus and Lily Luna are cheesy as hell.

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But...Ginny didn't really lose anyone important to her? Apart from Fred, of course, but George had a son called Fred, so that name was taken. I mean, maybe she had friends who died in the Battle of Hogwarts, but since we didn't know any of them, if there had been a daughter named Jessica Theresa or something, the narration of the epilogue would have had to have stopped entirely to explain that Jessica and Theresa were two of Ginny's best friends ever who died during the Second War, and then everyone would have complained that it came completely out of nowhere and why did we never see these two girls before??

The argument that Ginny had no say in the names of their kids really annoys me. What was she supposed to say? "What's that? You want to honour the memory of your dead parents, godfather and mentor when it comes to choosing names for our children? No, fuck you. I like 'Carl'."

I liked the named, but definitely would have liked to see Ginny have a say. Why no Fred? He died, and he was FAMILY.

I do feel sorry for Albus Severus though. I think James Albus Potter would have been better, and split the wtf quotient between two kids. It's like how I would love to name one of my kids Merlin, but would give them a normal first name to hide it if they wanted and reduce the '...seriously, you named them that? DO YOU HATE YOUR POOR CHILD!' aspect.

Well, I think you'd have to assume Sirius wasn't important to Ginny. Harry doesn't really get in depth about other people's relationships with other people. Technically, everyone else spent more time with Sirius than Harry, so... I'd say the same about Dumbledore, since he seems the type to have relationship with people he thinks have had a hard time, and we don't know if Ginny figured anything was going on, during the year Snape was headmaster. We just don't have any confirmation from Harry's view, so a lot of people would think it didn't happen. But that's not necessarily a reason why they wouldn't.

In addition, I know of a lot of families who tend to honor people by doing this, and it's simply cultural. The Wizarding world, with it's slightly medieval feel, seems exactly like the type of culture to do this. Ron's middle name is the name of one of his Uncle's I believe. I can't remember if Fred/George's middle names are actually Fabian/Gideon, but the pattern is exactly the same. Not to mention, Harry's middle name is his dad's, and James wasn't even dead at the time. Even if Ginny wasn't close to any of these people, she would probably encourage that cultural expression.

And I repeat, real life families do this all the time. I can understand thinking it's simply a fictional convention, especially Severus, and being annoyed because of it, but it actually happens a lot.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-31 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It honestly surprises me how weirded-out people can be about children being named after the dead. I'm Jewish, and if and when I have kids, if I don't first use up all the family names, either my father will kill me or it will kill him. Passing on the names of the dead can be super, super important to people.

Yeah, I know a lot of people who do this with passed family members. And other wizarding names seem to mirror this anyway.

My main problem was that they were all Harry's dead people (although Albus gets a pass on that front from me). Doesn't Ginny get a say in her kids names? I don't know, maybe one of her brothers got to the name Fred first, I can't remember that epilogue very well, but it still feels really, really odd to me.

This secret reminded me why I never look for second gen fanart for any fandom. If there's one kid, they look exactly like either one for their parents or an even combination of both of them: hair from one, eyes from the other. Two kids, one looks like mom and the other like dad. Three kids, one looks like mom, the second looks like dad and the third looks like a combination of them both.

Arnold is okay in my opinion.
So the kids would be screwed either way. Oh well. I still think it's a nice gesture to name your kids after dead people you admire but please consider what it might do to your kids. Although in HP with names like Hermione there are unusual names whereas Harry and Ron got normal names.

I don't really care about the name issue, but the art is bothering me. It looks like certain parts were traced and other parts free-drawn and not all that well, either. Plus that coloring... Not everything needs to be colored with a softbrush with 100% opacity. And that shading...

You've got to remember that Ginny was naming pets and people don't name pets the same way they do people. I mean, I don't see any kids around named "Scruffy" but there are plenty of dogs. So we can't really use her pet naming taste as a basis for her baby naming taste.

I'm not particularly fond of the names myself, I've thought of some alternative middle names that would have evened things out a little bit. (Not saying these are any better, mind)

James Arthur, Albus Sirius and Lily Molly

I don't know what I would have gone for if I were JK though. If they'd just been random names like Phil, Mark and Anna it would have felt a little lacking, I think, so names that meant something to the readers would be important. Since the books are in Harry's POV, it ended up being a little biased in that direction.

I think JK did a good job with the rest of the 2nd gen though.

I, personally, was only bothered by Albus Severus. I was fine with James Sirius and Lily Luna. If it had been Albus Remus, I would have been fine too. The Severus part bugs me, though.

Also, even though I do like two of the names, I think it does say something about the Harry/Ginny relationship that most of the names are ones that would only mean something to Harry. Even if Ginny is bad at choosing names, they are her kids too so she should have just as much of a say.

Eh, to be fair, unless your names are completely made up, either your name already comes from someone who is dead or will be dead at some point soon enough in your life, if you're being named after someone in particular and not just getting your name picked out of a baby names book or piece of mythology, literature, fiction, ect.

I'm not exactly happy with the whole "all their kids names are Harry's dead people" thing, either, but I can kinda see it being a simple issue of, Ginny's only family she lost was Fred (who George already named his son after), and most of her close friends are the same as Harry's and most of them lived, so presumably she didn't have many "dead people of her own" to name her kids after, especially if most likely those names after those particular people would be long taken up by the time she had her kids, anyway. (That said, I personally think she's the one who went for Luna, or at least suggested it, as Lil' Lily's middle name).

LOL I'd never thought of it that way XD

Personally, I love the kids' names. I love that they gave them meaningful names (and honestly, they're far from the only ones to do that - remember Fred II and Molly II and friggin' Teddy Lupin? Even Ron's named after a family member, Uncle Bilius.) And I love the names themselves, Albus Severus and Lily Luna sound great (alliteration FTW).

You are not alone, anon. Here, have two fic recs:
* The Bravest Man: “Albus Severus, you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts.” How Harry and Ginny named their second son.
* The Wendell That Wasn't: Adorable AU/crackfic where Ginny picks the kids names JUST to mess with ghost!Snape.
