Come on, they're probably just kids.

Plus, you can get an idea for what the fic is going to be like by looking at someone's profile. Political views? You're probably going to be looking at issue!fic. Enthusiastic proclamations of their love for yaoi? Hello, weirdly forced seme/uke roles or things that shouldn't be lube getting used as lube anyway. Silly lists and quizzes? Don't expect them to take anything seriously. Long quotes about writing or human nature or life? Don't expect their fics to be any fun. Itemized list of their shipping preferences and why they ship them? Prepare for extreme fluff or extreme angst. Pretty much nothing there? That's usually going to be either the best fic or Topless Robot material.

With LJ or AO3, it's harder to tell if something's bad until you've already invested a little time into it and someone's getting shampoo shoved in places.
