I don't know about you, but one of the few changes I actually did like in LJ was the handy 'new' comment things that popped up when you revisted a page. Fortunately, there is a way to implement them in DW and make them work in the same way. The steps I'm going to detail have been tried and tested in both Firefox and Chrome, and should work without much problems.

Here is the guide. Now with less giant scrolly comment.

What about Safari? Do they work in Safari?

I already had the new comments script, but I prefer how this looks, thanks!

I've been using this, but I'm not sure if it's actually working properly or not. It just lists every single comment as new, and there doesn't seem to be any way of stopping it from saying comments are new, even if I've already read them. It sort of negates the point of having the new alert there in the first place. I'm not really sure what the deal is there. Is it supposed to do that or have I done something wrong?

No, I don't think you're doing anything wrong! If you check pw201's original post, there's this line in it:

After you've installed all of the above, visit an entry on LJ and marvel at the "NEW" links on all the new comments (which will be all of them at this point, as the script wasn't around previously to remember which ones you'd seen before).

Which is something I do experience when I use the script as well. When I first go to a page on DW (any page), all the comments there do show up as 'new'. The second time I visit it, though, or after I refresh, the 'new' link is gone and they all show up normally, and it should on subsequent visits (or after the first refresh, at least) only show up on comments that you haven't seen before. Is this what you're experiencing?

I just tried refreshing a page I've been to before, and it still comes up with the new notification. i'm not really sure what the problem is, though I have had some problems installing the script. I'm using chrome on a mac, and originally I just installed the userscript and it just put it in to the chrome extensions. I just disabled it, installed tampermonkey and reinstalled the script. It didn't come up in the tampermonkey options though, so I copied the source code and installed it there myself. Could any of this have something to do with it? XD

actually, I've just reopened this whole general comments thread and this particular thread is not listed as new. So I guess it is working?

!! It seems like it might be sorted out, then. You could check it out on other pages, too? Go to one of the other FS pages you haven't been on yet, refresh and see if everything stops showing up as new, then submit a new comment of your own to see if that one turns up correctly.

the fact that my internet is being obscenely slow isn't really helping right now, but I tried it on another thread and it does seem to be working. Yay! thanks =]

I am glad that seems to have worked out, then! I should've probably mentioned the 'this doesn't work if you install it directly into chrome' bug that I had myself earlier. I'll make an edit to the post on my DW with that in, thanks.

Oh! I tried it in chrome extensions first and did have the same problems you were talking about, everything showing up as new and refusing to go away, that was weird as well which is why I had to retry it with Tapermonkey (and haven't had much problems since). I'm sorry though, if it's a mac issue I wouldn't be very sure of what to do, I'm normally a windows user myself.

Hmm... there shouldn't be a problem there, I think, but this is what turns up for me when I go to the Options page on my Tapermonkey and this when I double click on the script itself. Are you getting something similar?

(I'd suggest trying to uninstall the script totally from tapermonkey and deleting it off Chrome extensions then and reinstalling it again using this link. I really hope that might be of some help...)
