I think you need to take a third option if you want to become popular/well-known in fandom.
The question is this: do you want to write gen or romanceless gen? Just because gen is focussed on plot doesn't mean that everyone has to be single, you know? You can go on and write your sprawling epic and also mention coples. Even if you don't ship anything Glee has many canon couples you can refer. If you don't care about shipping there's no reason why they should've broken up in yor version. You don't have to do anthing graphic or super-important with them but they may enhance the experience for some readers.
I think the best fics develop a mix of this and don't focus on one pair alone. If you want to write without any romance you have a very difficult job though, especially in a high school setting.
