I presume they manage just like pro gymnasts, dancers, acrobats... Cirque du Soleil has women doing contortion and stuff in white spandex, and they certainly can't skip shows for their period.

My cousin does that stuff. She started in gymnastics, and has headed into dance like what the Cirque de Soleil performers do. She's mostly bones and muscle at this point in her life. She says she doesn't even get her period consistently anymore, because she has such low body fat, and that it's not unusual among the other girls.

Yeah, that was my thought--don't lots of gymnast not get their periods at all? So it's like a non-issue for acrobats and performers.

Well, she said lots, not all. She only brought it up because one of the girls couldn't perform because hers was so bad, and my cousin was completely flabbergasted by the idea. (She's still a young teenager, and she only hangs out with her team, so she's presumably never dealt with variation before) She had no idea that it really was like that for some women.

Yes, BUT part of the issue is that many gymnasts start young and due to low body fat, actually don't go through puberty at all. You can have girls up to eighteen and nineteen who haven't ever experienced a period and look to be twelve or thirteen.

Well, there you go--odds are good that debilitating menstrual cramps are a non-issue for most Cirque du Soleil caliber gymnasts/acrobats. (Which doesn't exactly sound healthy, but that's not the point here.)

Oh, yeah, no, I agree. Most of these examples, I'm going, "She's probably too fit/active/thin/malnourished to get her period, let alone deal with debilitating cramps". It's really the most obvious solution since it's 13%-17% where women are in danger of losing menstruation, and most superheroines are drawn pretty damn skinny these days.

Eh, superheroines aren't drawn that skinny anymore. At least, not compared to the 90's. Oh, no, make no mistake, they're still thin, yeah. But--especially in the better books--they're fit, and look reasonably human-shaped. Not that there aren't artists who still contort their spines and forget that torsos house organs and the like, but say, Batwoman, Batgirl, Cliff Chiang's Wonder Woman, Amanda Conner's Powergirl, Dustin Nguyen's Huntress (seriously, did you see that? He made those stupid shorts and belly window look like it was practical athletic wear. The man is a wonder), that sort of thing...they look healthy-but-slim, as opposed to gaunt, twisted, or downright implausible.

The Impossible Hourglass was more of a 90's/Liefeldian phenomenon really.

I took gymnastics for a semester in high school (post-puberty by several years at that point) for the phys-ed credit and it made my periods a lot lighter, but didn't make them go away. (Otherwise, I had very heavy periods back then.) Being very active and spending a lot of time stretching and running around on rooftops would probably help lighten a heroine's periods enough that leakage is less likely. That wouldn't help women who rely on superpowers, unless they also practice gymnastics on the side.
