Yeah, Nolan's not much of a fanboy. He seems like someone intrigued by the general Batman concept, but not really interested in the little details of the mythos. Which is part of why his movies were so universally appealing, I imagine, because the vast majority of his audience is like that, too. I agree it was a serious waste of material for eagle-eyed fans to argue over in forums. "Was that blonde really Harley? Here's a five-page essay of why I think so."

Yeah, and I think that's a big problem I have with his movies, especially the last one, which didn't feel even a little bit like an actual Batman movie. But it seems like a pass to give the excuse of the general audience not being interested in the details of the mythos. A good writer, a good director, someone who genuinely loves his source material can make the audience care about things they never knew about. They can weave old stories into the new thing so well that the audience never knew that such-and-such was from this issue back in '78 or what-have-you. And while Nolan's movies do very well, I hope the take-away Hollywood gets from his movies isn't "remove mythos; make universally appealing." Because there's just so little honest joy in it. And if that were the secret formula, then Avengers, which was made with absolute love for its source material, with in-jokes and continuity humor, and small characters like Sitwell and Hill added for the sake of having them in there, wouldn't have beat it out at the box office.

Nolan makes nice movies. But I'd really rather watch a talented fanboy move a movie about something her really and truly loves, because that love will translate on screen much better than "I had to use these characters, so here's their names, I will now have them perform an action their comic-counterpart is known for, before returning to my writing them like they were my own OC."

Thank you for this. Nolan's movies left me completely cold (particularly his version of Bruce Wayne), and what you just said is probably a large part of the reason why, though I could never articulate it. While very smart, they really do lack any of the joy I usually get out of the character and the universe. That's also why I'm thankful to The Avengers and other films like it for being immediate proof that superhero movies don't have to use Nolan's formula to set box office records. I agree, I'd take a skilled fan at the helm any day.

The Marvel movies managed a ton of nods to the comics while still appealing to general audiences.
