Because we're Americans, and we tend to have the loudest, craziest fans with the most money to waste on this sort of shit.

So start something in your country. I mean, I get what you're saying and I can see how that's annoying, but it's not like the American fans can really do anything for you. Try to make the fandom a bigger presence where you live.

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-09-15 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The group that went over were either New Yorkers or Californians. Not exactly a huge, sweeping bit of Americana. And it wasn't a large cast; seven people. But perhaps the reason why they're all Americans, who, mind you traveled to Scotland for the documentary, is probably because it's easier for Americans to make arrangements with other Americans. Same language, same holidays (if one has the a three day weekend because of a holiday, they all have that same three day weekend), same currency that you need to convert, same traveling rules and restrictions. (Not all passports are the same.) Like I said, it's easier. And when you are doing a what is in no doubt a micro-budget documentary, versus just sight seeing, you are doing a job. That last thing you want is for Harry Potter expert to be stuck in customs because passport restrictions while the rest of the group is ready to go. Time is precious and you have a job to do.

Now if this was a documentary that had a 100+ million dollar budget, then I can see why you would be questioning this. But the whole thing probably cost then what you would spend on a car.

So, get together with British fans and do something. Don't blame Americans for your lack of organization.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
well the films were made by Warner Bros which probably explains why a lot of the good stuff is found in America, like the theme park.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Americans care enough to invest money in these things? The Wizarding World is at the Universal Studios Theme Park, which has provided rides and shows for several Warner Bros. films. I mean, the movies were made, albeit with non-American actors, by Warner Bros., an American franchise. Warner Bros. also produced a bunch of games and merchandise.

Are you really whining that it's not fair for a country that has invested millions more than anyone else is continuing to spend millions more to keep the franchise going? By the by, Warner Bros. is planning to turn the sets at the Leavesden studios into an attraction.

Jesus Christ, you're a douchebag.

Occasionally I sulk and whine about crap writers like EL James and Stephenie Myer getting all the money and success for writing crap books while awesome writers like myself are drowning in debt while our writing languishes unappreciated and unremarked on by fandom at large.

And then I remember it's because no matter what I think of their writing, they're the ones who got off their asses and put the work in.

And then I get over myself.

You should probably do the same.

Warner Brothers owns the movie rights and can do whatever the hell they want with it, which includes making theme parks. With the expansion of a Wizarding World coming to LA I would not be shocked if they bring one to Europe in the next few years, but I'm not sure how much physical presence they have over there.

As for LeakyCon? Well that's the UK fandom's own damn fault. I'm flabbergasted you guys don't have your own Harry Potter cons.

No place in the world deserves the experiences more than any other, but yeah, it sucks that it's becoming very concentrated in the US.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to the theme park, it's because it was more convenient for Warner Brothers to set it up in a touristy place that already had the attractions for Disney World and Universal Studios. Also, American fans have put out a lot of money when it came to the books and movies, and that has a lot to do with the fact that America is just so big.

As for fan events, well...what is so hard to set up an event where you live? Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet are US based and IIRC they have said that the majority of visitors to the sites were in the US.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It happened in Lord of the Rings fandom, too. US fans got every fucking thing going, the UK and the rest of the world practically fuck all - and it'll be the same with The Hobbit. In fact, every time the US gets into a British fandom, you might as well kiss goodbye to the good stuff for anywhere but the US, where so many fans just take getting it all for granted. God bless the ones who realise how lucky they are, too, tho. :¬)

This brings me back to the time when that huge cunt Saeva fluffed up her beefcurtains and started flapping them about how Harry Potter isn't "Brittish Brittish" (her spelling) the way "Brtitish people are Brittish Brittish" and she hated "Britt-Picking" and she didn't have to submit to "Britt-picking", no Sir! Because Harry Potter, because of USA! USA! fan involvement, was at least, if not more, AMURRRRIHCAN! as it was...

"BRITTISH BRITTISH!"

Yeah, Cassandra Clare/Heidy Tandy/Dionne Williford weren't the only insufferable batshit Americans in that fandom with enough issues to go to war over.

OP, are you complaining how the UK doesn't have the same things that the US fandom has when it comes to Harry Potter?

What is stopping the UK fandom from doing so?

You would think it would be easier for the UK fans to get off their asses since Harry Potter is set in the UK when compared to what the US fans have to do when it comes to Harry Potter. (Train tickets are much cheaper than plane tickets.)

What have you done to make this happened? What have your fellow UK fans done? I know what the Americans have done because, here, we have a result.

You want a big Harry Potter UK con? Have you tried anything to make this happened? Have you tried to gather people and pool your money? Have you looked at venues that would work? Have you even made social media pages asking if anyone would be interested in going to this con? Have you even tried anything?

Wizarding World needed to be part of an existing theme park. They weren't going to take the risk of opening a whole new theme park in a smaller country when they could just do it as PART of a theme park in the biggest theme park destination in the world.

It was just economically sensible.

That being said, Wizarding World has been so successful that they could probably do a small theme park in the UK.

As for leaky-con, Americans set up the con so of course it's in America. Finding Hogwarts is the same. I'm pretty sure if UK fans set up these things they would be set in the UK.

Basically outside of WW, these are all fan created things, and it seems a bit silly to be upset in this manner that fans in the US just happen to be a bit more proactive than fans in the UK. The only people at fault there are the UK fans.

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-09-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's a fuckton more Americans in the English speaking fandom than anyone else. It's purely a numbers game. The US has the 3rd largest population in the world, nearly all of which have access to the internet and popular culture. Just using random chance, most fan projects are going to be made by one.

Sorry, anon #2! Accidentally left the comment I wanted for 03 here. I, uh, have nothing really to say to you specifically, as I'm an American and totally unable to repatriate to the UK for your benefit because it kind of requires the economy not sucking all possible dicks right now. And it is not inclined to do that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Just be proud something your country made generated a hugely successful franchise and a theme park in a country with six times its population. If something American turned into a theme park in England or France or whatever, I'd think that was pretty cool.
