Fanfic has its own challenges even if it's hard to see if they are equal to that of writing an original work, but even original stuff has derivative inspirations, etc. I think the reason people have such a hard time crossing over to original fic is because they just get very out of practice with it; there are plenty of people who have written original stories for a long time and feel they can't write fanfic worth shit.
