DA

They certainly did have an effect on him, but I thought it was lessened because he was able to hang on to the grim truth that he was innocent?

(Yeah: "I think the only reason I never lost my mind is that I knew I was innocent. That wasn't a happy thought, so the dementors couldn't suck it out of me ... but it kept me sane and knowing who I am ... helped me keep my powers ... so when it all became ... too much ... I could transofmr in my cell ... become a dog." (p. 371 in my copy of Prisonor of Azkaban). (Sorry, I have too much time on my hands, apparently. xD))

Yep, they didn't drive him completely mad because he hold to unhappy thoughts but not because he was innocent.

... the "unhappy" thought was that he was innocent.
So, yes, his innocence did make the difference in the end? Had he not been innocent, he would have had no *truth* - however unhappy - to sustain him.
(I mean, "I think the only reason I never lost my mind is that I knew I was innocent." is pretty explicit, no?)

(Sorry, pedantic argument much, but I haven't had the opportunity to talk to people about HP without it being stupid shippery stuff in forever, so I'm jumping on the chance. xD)

Yes, but him being innocent was a detail. If someone guilty had found anchor in unhappy thoughts, it would have been the same. My point was that his innocence was an accesory to the real strategy. Bellatrix wasn't too unhinged after Azkaban and she certainly was guilty.
