I'm torn. In the fandom the consensus is actually that the first season was pretty bad or at least "meh" but everything else is good. While I love all of the references and the crazy scenarios, I do kind of miss the show it was shaping itself to be early in the first season - because I did like that a lot.

Really? In the section I hang out in, seasons one and two are perfect and season three is crap, minus RCT.

+1 That's what I hear all the time too.

Or, well, actually I mainly just dislike three episodes at the end of season 3.

But we hang out in similar fandom spaces :D So you likely know this already.

Have you tried rewatching season 3? I don't know why but I found season 3 sooooo much better upon a second watch. And many people I've talked to felt the same.

Me too! I pretty much am in love with season 3 except for most of Origins of Vampire Mythology (except for the bit with Jeff and Shirley), the forced Troy/Britta in The First Chang Dynasty, and pretty much all of Introduction to Finality (which I can and have gone on and on about).

A lot of people that I've talked to think that season 1 is the best and the show declined since then.

But season 3 is my personal favorite, so...

I actually vastly prefer season one, even though I agree that some individual episodes in s2 and s3 were better than any individual episodes in s1. S1 just felt so much warmer and more organic to me... it lost some of its charm when it started getting super meta.

Yep, this. It became more about cleverness for the sake of being clever, and less about serving the story. The first season was wildly uneven, especially the first half, but it also had a heart.
