Have you read the Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce? The main character, Daine, has a strong magical connection to all animals, wolves especially, and hates it when people are all "but everyone says wolves attack humans!"

And, as has been brought up in this thread, awesome hyenas. And bats. I can't recommend these books highly enough. (If you're really interested in the author's Tortall books, you might want to start with Alanna: The First Adventure for reasons of continuity, but the Immortals quartet is my personal favorite, and you'd start with Wild Magic if you're just there for Daine.)
