The search term is "eustachian tube dysfunction."

Hrm. But that is a (usually) temporary problem?

Tell that to the blood vessel that ruptured in one of my sinus cavities one time. :-(

The worst is children with colds. Poor things just don't know what to do. My niece flew with a cold once (she was 10) and cried the whole time.

Dristan nasal spray can usually resolve it (if you don't have internal physical anomalies like yours truly), once the pain hits. Barring that, taking cold pills before you fly usually helps, as well. (Tho' it doesn't help me, if I have a cold, since I have to take extra strength decongestants TO fly, even without a cold.)

The "temporary" results of my ruptured blood vessel was losing what little residual hearing I had in one ear, my sense of smell, and having to smell the rotten blood pooling in my sinus cavity and getting massively infected...for a full year after I flew for the very first time. This happened on my way TO my destination, resulting in a miserable trip, and an even more hellish return.

And then it happened again, a couple of years later (no ruptured blood vessel that time, though I was completely deaf for a long time after that, unless I manually "popped" my ears every 30 seconds or so). Then the Dr. prescribed the regimen that seems to have worked, thus far...but the side effects of the meds aren't that great, either. Preferable to the alternative, obviously, but yeah.

So ask me why I hate flying.
