This. I kinda hate how people use it against Leonard, he tried to fix it stupidly, but no he doesn't think less of Penny. She was the one worried about it in the first place, if my memory serves me correctly.

But he does think less of Penny for not being as academically accomplished as he is. He's perfectly happy to show her off to his nerd buddies but when his mother comes around - someone whose opinion is arguably the most important in his world - he lies and tries to hide the relationship from her.

It's one thing to be awkward but well-meaning. It's another to be ashamed of someone for not meeting your privately held standards. (And, as a later conversation with Howard and a Venn diagram of Leonard's dating prospects shows, he does have standards that Penny isn't meeting. But, rather than being brave and taking a chance on looking around, he clings to Penny's prettiness and familiarity and *settles* for her.)
