I used to like Deadman Wonderland a lot, at least until the ending.

After that I honestly have a hard time thinking of it as better as... most other series I have seen so far.

how does it end? my interest was piqued too but I'd rather not get into something only to be let down at the end

I liked that the ending doesn't cop out. SPOILER:

To draw a comparison, Superior is a great manga, but it backs away from the fact that the female lead is a mass murderer, lessening and even excusing her actions. DW throws it in your face. Everything "innocent" about Shiro is an act. She's fully aware of the magnitude of her crimes, and her suffering can't be used to excuse them. Ganta forgives her even in that context, knowing that she doesn't forgive herself, and that's a very gutsy direction for the story to take.
