I'm going to be honest, this just makes it better for me. I am laughing so much right now.

I also wanted to like Eowyn, but her swordplay looked really clunky and awkward to me, too. I'm not an expert, obviously, but at very least she never looked confident doing it, it looked really clunky. Considering how OP the Fellowship dudes could fight, and look strong and badass doing it, you'd think they could've made Eowyn looked a little cooler. The scene was disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. She looked very clumsy and unsure of herself. Her swings always seemed underpowered, like she hadn't practiced.

(The secret's hilarious, though!)

The stunt team were quite complimentary about Miranda Otto - I think she got a lot of props for going outside her comfort zone and really trying to nail the fight scenes. Having said that, this scene was really disappointing for me, but that's more about how it was scripted, designed and directed than the acting.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally don't doubt she tried, but it's a good example how you can try your best and still not nail it, IMO. All her fight scenes look like they're being done by someone who's well out of their comfort zone.

There's footages of a cut scene of Eowyn fighting Uruk-hai in the Glittering Caves on the behind-the-scenes DVD (released with the Special Edition DVDs and the extended edition blu-rays). The footage is rough, but it just looks so beautiful and Eowyn so proficient and badass that it honestly makes me mad it was cut (the storyline it was cut from was a stupid thing about Eowyn and Arwen one-upping each other constantly) and Eowyn's fight scenes in Pelennor Fields were so lacking.

(But of course we had time for that amazingly terrible "Eowyn can't cook lol" scene)

And that's why so many roles for women are shit: because they're expected, at all times, to be visually appealing, even under extreme duress or when outright dying.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, boy, here we go...

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol baiting much? Also, silly Muppet face, is silly Muppet face regardless of gender.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Technically Op is arguing that she looks stupid, not that she looks ugly. However, whether or not OP would think the same expression looked just as stupid on a guy is another question. OP will surely say they would.

Bottom line: People do often respond in a weird and biased way towards female characters who are depicted as being stronger than the men around them. That said? Pick your battles.

I mean, plenty enough people poke fun at Luke Skywalker's "screaming chipmunk" face, as a friend put it (https://takeonrules.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/tumblr_liqavpyigb1qethe8-1.jpeg). I'm sure there's other examples, but I feel like a hammy/goofy delivery taking away from a dramatic moment isn't (for the most part) a gendered thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure how you get "women" out of this when it's about a very specific woman in a very specific role in a very specific scene.

Honestly I find that face fantastic, it certainly doesn't ruin anything for me.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't bother me either. When you're about to defeat an evil being who just murdered a beloved family member, you're allowed to have some crazy-eyes going on.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not if the crazy eyes inspire hilarity. It's just ridiculous and a poor acting choice.

That memetic moment is one of the best memes to come out of those movies!

Bahahaahahahahhahahahahhaa A+ secret

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Miranda Otto just didn't work as Eowyn for me (my headcanon for the character has always been extremely specific) and this scene is no exception.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I too am disappointed by Eowyn in the films, but I don't really blame Miranda Otto for that. I don't know if she is a good actress, but I liked pretty much everything she said about the character (loved that she critcised the stew scene), and I read somewhere she really fought to get some of Eowyn's coldness in the films, so I feel like the flaws in film!Eowyn were more about the choices Peter Jackson made, rather than the actress who had to interpret them.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her overall as Eowyn, but the fight scenes were not great.
diabolicalfiend: Callum Keith Rennie pushing his face into a pillow (good grief)

[personal profile] diabolicalfiend 2017-03-17 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, she's probably just rusty after all that time doing nothing. (Forcibly, but still.)

Funny faces make me like it more, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Her uncle may not have let her fight in actual battles, but I doubt she was banned from practicing.
diabolicalfiend: The 27th precinct carrying Gardino's coffin with a Schindler's List type red highlight. (funeral)

He didn't but having medieval lon sudar (I forget his name, sorry) leering after you every moment and everything some bloody shade of grey and black and her uncle turning into a Mummy is bound to kill your motivation.
