I've considered this... Reader insert fics make me uncomfortable and I'm fairly sure I'm some type of asexual. But I also dislike reader insert fics that aren't sexual at all? Like, reader is part of the team, or reader is some character's daughter, or whatnot. Sometimes these will still have a romantic component, but not always. Plus, I usually don't finish them. I come across them when I'm scrolling through tumblr, see just enough to realize it's reader insert, get squicked out, and that's it.

I'm truly happy that this has helped you figure yourself out. I'm just wondering what my problem is, I guess?

I've heard some people say they don't like reader-insert stories because they don't like putting themselves into these situations, and prefer reading about the characters doing this stuff instead. Either that, or they have a hard time reading a reader-insert story because they're sitting there thinking, "I wouldn't do that" (same reason some people don't like "you"-based fics). Maybe that's the case with you, perhaps?

Yeah, I'm not asexual but reader insert fics make me uncomfortable too.

I am ace, and I strongly dislike reader insert fics. But I think I dislike them for multiple reasons, and I think me being ace is only one of those reasons.

I mean, reader insert is just very anathema to what fanfic is about for me. It feels very...intrusive, to me, if that makes sense. Like, I love these characters and their story and their world, and none of that is about me or "my" world - nor is it really even compatible with me and my world.

Not asexual, but I can't deal with reader insert fics either. It just seems weird to me to try and write something that's so individual in taste to everyone and then aim it towards a random anonymous person. I just feel like 'No, I didn't like that, actually' 'No, that isn't "turning me on," I hate that, please stop.'

I don't like them because

1) I feel like I'm being given a front-row seat in someone else's fantasy, which is true of most fic, of course, but reader-insert just takes away all pretence, and that just makes me feel uncomfortable, and

2) I can't get past the fact that the "reader character" just isn't thinking and acting the way I would - which also makes me uncomfortable because I'm being asked to project myself into a character beyond what one normally experiences identifying with characters whike reading, and it's weird trying to inhabit someone who feels so wrong.
