The brother met some guy who had radioactivity powers, and because it was unstable he was going to explode like a nuclear bomb. To stop him from blowing up the entire city, the guy took his brother way up into the sky and since his brother was, you know, radioactive, he got burned really bad.
So he's got a bad case of radiation poisoning and some wicked burns.
