I'm American, and I greatly enjoyed all the Roald Dahl books I read as a child, in part because of the gruesome and scary bits.

Tropes aren't bad, and some kids really get a kick out of that kind of cruel humor. (most kids also know how to draw the line between fact and fiction, and so don't let cruel humor influence their behavior IRL)
