Isn't it more about fandom? I mean, isn't it that the juggernaut fandoms tend to be a female-dominated spaces, so what we see in fandom reflects female rather than male tastes? I come from a family where all the men prefer stories about women -- my late father loved Pride and Prejudice, my brother, P1, likes kick-ass women, my other brother, P2, likes elegant women -- so I've never believed the whole 'men only watch/read stories about macho men' business.
