Oh, both Left Hand of Darkness and Word for World is Forest happen in primarily rural settings as do many of Sheri Tepper's novels, although Tepper and Le Guin are pretty heavy. The sunny California weather is probably the least depressing part of Parable of the Sower. Barsoom is a fun read if you can handle John Carter.
