MY SUSPICION THAT HUMANITY SUCKS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED

it's more beneficial to the artist to have that art being circulated by the masses because it makes them that much easier to recognize in the future.

I don't follow this logic you put out. how is it beneficial to the artist?

person 1: oh, pretty icon!
person 2: fanart!
person 1: who drew it?
person 2: no idea, but isn't it pretty?
person 1: I'd love to see more of their work.
person 2: sorry, can't help you. but look at this pretty 100x100 oversaturated, words too small to be read, butchered image! isn't it pretty?
person 1: yeah.

The only benefit would be for people who like the style of my icons to be able to find more like it.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

But Vincent/Auron quiet, tragic bishie, Yuffie/Selphie/Rikku (people try to group Penelo in there, but she's been hit by the cluestick and seems to have a lot more common sense than these 3), Cloud/Squall emo, Aeris/Rinoa/Yuna gentle, soft girl...

Basch/Balthier the tragic/quiet bishie, Fran the fanservice, Ashe the emo boy, Vaan the cheerful thief, Penelo the young fanservice/gentle soft magic user.... yes, 12 is really far from those stereotypes!

Personally? Here's what I think. There is no clue stick that needs to hit Rikku et all - she's a smart girl. But since there's more to her personality than the fact that she's perceptive and intelligent (perhaps not in a book sense, but there's more than one kind in the world), it's easy to ignore. Penelo? No personality to speak of, so, "oh! she's smart!" becomes better praise for her.

I really despise people that put down one character to elevate another like that. Every character in every FF ever is a stereotype to a degree - some more so than others, granted. But to claim that 12 has the only mature, unique characters? It's fine that you like them, but don't be silly about it.

[identity profile] shahrizai.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
In terms of exposition I was thinking specifically of the ACTUAL EXPOSITION DUMPS. Not characters talking to one another, but the screen fading to black and a narrator explaining to the audience what was doing on.

Ah, okay! That's a thing with the Ivalice games - FF Tactics is the same. *shrugs* I don't mind it. But again, different strokes for different folks. I see it as an atmospheric thing, as the narrator is an NPC and seeing it from his perspective is interesting.

I don't like Vaan and Penelo at all, but I accept that I'm not going to like everyone, and just like with characters I don't like I just tend to ignore them.

It's all about respect. Leaving aside all the arguments about who owns what and where permission should be sought and all that, what happened to a little common courtesy and respect? There have to be all these convoluted rules about it now? About how and when and where you should extend courtesy and when you can tell someone to fuck off you'll do as you please because it's not legal?

Jesus Fuck.

"It's perfectly plausible that Kaoru would choose to mount his brother as opposed to the other way around, and in fact, I find it more than likely that it would play out that way sometimes."

Do you realize just how tragic you sound?

Where the heck are you looking, because you can find just as large of a fanbase for FFXII as any other FF game.

Personally, the game is so very mediorc to me that I skipped a lot of the sidequests because I wanted to be done with the game. And I've played every FF game as well, including FFT (<3 this game so much!) and FFTA, and a bit of FFXI. Vaan is about as interesting as dried toast, he's probably one of the worst FF main characters because he simply does nothing to the story. He had very few moments where I thought he would actually, you know, be interesting, but... nothing.

And don't use the arguement for FFX, 'Well, Yuna is the MC of there!' because Tidus at least contributes to the story. Vaan does... nearly nothing.

And the game runs like FFXI offline. Even my sister, who played FFXI obsessively, said so and while I didn't play FFXI nearly as much as her (I mainly played WoW), it did feel a lot like the battle system in the game. If I wanted to grind, I could hop onto WoW and do it there.

The only thing I can say is that the game is beautiful and I liked the track as much as I liked FFVI's. But then again, so was Valkyrie Profile 2, and that not only was a hard game, but the characters weren't as dull as dirt. The plot could've been interesting, but it suffered from dry dull characters. Maybe only half of them were remotely interesting among the main cast, you could toss Vaan and Penelo out and not realize they were missing.

Couldn't care less, you couldn't care less. Stop misusing the English language you piece of shit. Seriously what you said implies that you do care. Really it's not that hard to remember it's not a stupid complicated rule of which the English language has many. I've only ever seen Americans say this, and only in the last few months, and every time it happens I want to go over there and hurt them. What's happened that people have suddenly start speaking this way? (Yes I'm taking all my anger over this on you, sorry)

i think it's just a characteristic of the internets. SO much stuff gets passed around that eventually what possible credit was there gets lost. I'm not sure how to go on this, because i agree that if you don't want your art used, don't put it on the 'Net. thats just the way the world is now.

What I find the funniest about this is that Ulliel seems to be much more appreciated overseas than in France. He's not the sexiest or best french actor anyway :)

Just don't suck on their feet like some chick on Den of Angels does.
Then you're good. :')

No, really. As long as you can continue to tell the difference between what is reality and what is the doll-fantasy that many people create, you'll be fine. I've never had any issue with it myself, but I suppose that it may be because I've never created characters for my dolls, and to me they are just very beautiful objects.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No offense meant, but maybe you need to realize that not everyone shares your opinion. What you deem "melodramatic" is, to some artists (like for example the doujinshika who closed down her site because she got a bunch of asses making fun of her -- saying shit like "I hope we make you cry" -- when she politely emailed someone who had scanned and put her books online), the only way they can protect their work.

Everyone has different opinions, and just because you'd be okay with someone taking credit for your hard work doesn't mean others will. I really don't see why respecting other people's wishes has become this idea that is nowadays worthy of mockery and/or just plain lack of understanding.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* No kidding! Or, y'know, actually paying attention to the little disclaimer that a lot of fanart sites put up -- which are usually in English! -- that kindly asks people to not use their art.

It's one thing to not agree, and another to sit there and mock it in such a manner. That's just plain childish, to say the least.

(BTW, love your icon! Elizabeth ♡)

Barring the fact that the technology to allow characters to show that amount of subtle emotion in their faces is still relatively new, and for years and years we RPG fans were relying almost solely on text and ellipses to understand what was going through a character's head, I don't really like the implication that people who didn't appreciate the development in FFXII aren't intelligent enough to understand "omg REAL character development."

I think there were a few characters in the game who were incredibly well done (Fran, Balthier and Larsa, without debate. And okay, I love Dr. Cid), but for the most part FFXII was a dire case of telling and not showing. For a good chunk of the game, everyone and their uncle was cautioning Ashe about how she was being corrupted by her quest for power, and all I could say about it was: "O RLY." She never shows any indication one way or the other besides looking pensively to the side once and a while and being told by others that she should be afraid of it. That's the kind of crap that gets on my nerves with FFXII- I can't think of many lines that characters had that weren't direct exposition, and while it may be more realistic that a party of traveling heroes would spend most of their time talking about the task at hand, when I compare it to things like Lunar, Tales of the Abyss, Grandia or Final Fantasy IX which go OVERBOARD letting you get to know the characters through the inanity of everyday life, it's hard for me to go back to FFXII without it looking a little lifeless.

Honestly, I just expected better from the people who made Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. FFT in particular has some of the most amazing, subtle and profound character development of any RPG I've ever played, and it managed to do it through a crappy translation and with characters that have no noses.

I'm not saying that you're wrong for seeing the amazing development in FFXII- actually, I'm a little envious because I keep desperately looking for reasons to like the game more than I do. I'm just saying that just because it appears to be more subtle doesn't automatically make it "better" and "more mature"; older RPGs may be cartoonish, overblown and melodramatic, but to a lot of people the characters are just as real and layered. Honestly: if you have to spend 50+ hours with a bunch of people, I think more is ALWAYS better than less.

Tintin and Captain Haddock, actually.

Actually, pretty fucking accurate compared to book encyclopedias and other published sources, but I'm too sleepy to trouble myself with explaining their editing system to you.

It was a literal case of 'rocks fall, everyone dies'

But y'know, with the Death Note instead.

Re: 25

Because when people see that piece of artwork again in the future, they'll recognize it more immediately and studies have shown that people are more inclined to buy something they recognize. This is a basic concept taught in advertising.

I understand the value of giving someone the artist's name, my sarcastic little friend. I'm just saying that it's more useful to the artist, even if someone doesn't know their name, for their artwork to be displayed in a small and harmless manner.

The M-W online seems to think it's valid for both, which makes sense to me.

Uhhhh what XD You do realize that I'm not taking this all that seriously, right? Hence terms like "mount"? Lord, I'm not that adamant about my pairings. XD

My only real beef here is the unfortunate seme/uke stereotyping, which does bother me. *shrug*
