I googled this, and apparently in the 1737 version of the Real Academia EspaƱola's dictionary, "perro" came from the Greek "pyr" (fire), because of the animal's "dry and fiery" character. Huh.
The other word for dog in Spanish I can think of that is more or less widespread through different countries is "can", so there is the "canidae" connection.
