Maybe when they said "the new stuff" they meant "anything after it went from black-and-white to color"?

Actually, it would not surprise me to learn that there were fans who only liked Hartnell and/or Troughton, and refused to watch anything else, because Doctor Who fandom is just LIKE THAT.
