Re: Favorite pet?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ferrets have actually been domesticated for thousands for years - whereas arguably, the "domestic" cat is really only semi-domestic, because they were kept around for their hunting abilities so basically were rewarded for their natural instincts, and plus cats keep breeding with feral cats. But domestic ferrets would have a harder time because they haven't been "outdoor" pets for so long. A ferret who was fed live mice might retain some hunting skills, but a ferret on the streets just won't survive long without food or water, and plus, will be likely to approach humans. Additionally, ferrets are typically sold already neutered, because female ferrets can die if they go into heat and don't get pregnant, so it's unlikely they ferrets would breed and create colonies of wild ferrets. "Three hours" was perhaps hyperbole, but a ferret is way more likely to get eaten by something, run over by something, or just get dehydrated or starve within a few days than it is to figure out how to hunt, be successful at it, and find a water source.

I can empathize with the singing part actually. Because I've always loved to sing but I'm terribly tone deaf so I don't sing in front of others. It never ends well.

Not that I ever thought it made me evil, it just bummed me out.

I'm sorry your parents disappointed you. It does sound like it's made the whole WIP updating thing a lot more of a sensitive issue for you.

"Similarly, just post the update if you have one."

That's what I do. But something you might not realize is that for a long running WIP, authors probably get quite a few inquiries about if they're going to finish, when they're going to finish, etc. Rather than reply individually to every single one (and to head off future inquiries), it can be a lot easier simply to post an update that says the author is still working on it, but there is no set deadline for the next chapter.

Really? Maybe I've just gotten really good at the towel trick, because I've subdued other people's raging cats with that one. And these are cats who are intent on my life, not just mildly irritated kittens.

I have three guinea pigs, and they've really helped me get through some really bad periods of depression in the past year. My family have had several dogs but it's not practical to have one in my current situation, so my little ladies are still lovely furry company that give me something to get up and be responsible for.

I'd really love to have rats in the future. Possibly a cat because they're a little more independent than dogs, and I'm not sure if my health will ever be at a point where I can give them the walks they need.

Totally like, it often becomes better to me with plot (if good) but I'm definitely in it for the clinging for comfort).

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Readers frequently don't read profiles or check where you ask them to check for updates. I know from firsthand experience. I still don't do that thing where I post "updates" that are just notes, but I can understand why some writers choose to handle it that way.

you're hanging out in the wrong corners of fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that explains all the Nicholas Lea, Chris Addison, and weird field fires of my youth secrets, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I NOPE'd out of Cats & Dogs and never saw it. Why are cats always the bad guys? I hate the evil cat stereotype, whereas a bad dog is just bad because the owner is mean to it or something.

But yeah subsequent cats were not so bad! Tarzan killed an evil big cat which I didn't like, I think the same happened in the Jungle Book (but there was a good cat too). But yes, there is The Lion King, Aristocats, and such. And aw I loved Oliver & Company, didn't realize it was Disney.

Do you like or believe in something that is considered a fraud or a pseudoscience by some people? Who or what? Me, I know that horoscopes aren't for real, but I still like reading all the descriptions of zodiac animals on menus at Chinese restaurants.

If I get married I will portmanteau my name with my wife's surname, so in effect we will be choosing a new surname.

Because fuck the patriarchy.

Alternately, just enchant some sick boots to make your weight limit something ridiculous that you'll never even get close to hitting. S'what I do, and it's using game mechanics, so it doesn't feel like cheating to me.

Well, I love dogs.

But realistically, it wouldn't be fair to have one now.

So...guinea pig? large enough to cuddle, but not TOO high maintenance.

Daredevil and iZombie

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I finally caved and got a Netflix account, and need Daredevil fic to bookmark and then read once I finish the first season. I'm not even sure what I'm looking for yet as far as common tropes in fandom, so... surprise me, please?

Unrelated to Netflix, but I am in the same situation for iZombie (though I know far less about it beyond the basic premise).

He's in that???

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-05-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever been (re)watching something and realized "Holy crap, I never realized he/she is in this!"

I saw some production stills from the film version of The Martian today and was really surprised to see that Sebastian Stan is in it. That seems like something I should have known considering my love of the book and the actor.

A repeating version of this is every time I watch Band of Brothers. On rewatches I have realized Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Simon Pegg, James McAvoy, Andrew Scott, and Jimmy Fallon were all in the show. It isn't until I get to know the actor from someplace else that I make the connections. Who knows who I will discover next!

Who are some of yours?

Re: How do you make secrets?

I usually either submit none or several, because the mood might not strike me for weeks, but then when I do feel like it, I have more of them.

and yeah, just MS paint

Re: How do you make secrets?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-05-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I use a combination of paint, GIMP and picasa. Usually I resize the image with paint, then add text with Picasa, fuck around with the colors a bit, then open in GIMP and continue to fuck around with colors. I fail majorly with every program, so what I can do with each is pretty limited, lol. (I do the same thing when making icons.)

As for tips... Just make sure the text is readable; that's the most important thing. Having a pleasant looking secret is great, but if you can't read it no one will care. (Oh, and it has to be 600x600 or under. That's something to remember; I fucked up once or twice by not looking at the dimensions.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, it's such a good show for a Burn Gorman fan, his character is downright adorable, especially in the current season. Makes a nice change from the usual assholes and outright villains.

Starsmore, because that's the one of the cooler ones without being too ridiculous.

That being said,I'm quite happy with my surname, so I don't ever plan to change it.

I could afford a cat if I didn't have debt. I would probably have gotten one by now, because my apartment allows them and they're low-maintenance enough for a single person who works full-time to be able to care for one.

Unfortunately paying off loans must come first, sigh :(
