If You Had To Choose A New Surname

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother likes to talk about how names were a sudden thing for a lot of European peasantry. Like suddenly a few hundred years back literally everyone was told to register a last name. In some places you had to pay to get pretty ones (I'm most familiar with Jewish names but an example would be any name with "Pearl" in it or "Shapiro", which is a sapphire), and a lot of people just went with nicknames ("Sorkin" means "Sarah's child" the same way Johnson means "son of John". Then there were people that the whole village called "The Redhead" or "the lame") or occupations (Baker, Smith, etc).

If you were suddenly forced to choose a new family name, what would it be? Mine would be "Shwartzenkatz" because it sounds better in Yiddish than the English "Black Cat". My family attracts black cats for some reason.

Get GIMP. It is the nicest free image manipulation program out there. It's basically a photoshop clone.

You're welcome! Gutters is another post-apocalyptic Hetalia fic I really like.

I just can't imagine h/c fic without at least ONE of the things you mentioned (no plot? no characerization?) unless it's a very brief drabble/slice of life hell in the trenches thing.

I go through googles image for a picture I like, check to see "all sizes" and go with the biggest that fits under the community guidelines. Then I add text using Picasa. It's very convenient and doesn't look as sloppy as paint. Occasionally I use it for simple color changes or slight crops.

After that I load them to tinypic and submit them.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I don't get this. Unless the piece is over 100K words, just put it up complete. It's not the "needing to be paid every 3K words" thing that gets me, although yick, it's the fact the quality of a work that's written in 1.5K-5K dribbles and published once a month goes way south, generally, compared to something that the author completes, then goes back and edits into a comprehensive whole and makes sure all the edges fit before publishing.

And if they aren't going to finish, then what are they doing publishing at all? It's like getting paid for a movie when all they're doing is showing the trailer.

Ferrets are sometimes illegal not because people are afraid they'll get loose and breed but because they can kill chickens. They're cute and all, but turn one loose in a hen house and it'll be like poultry Texas chainsaw massacre.

I follow a simple rule

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If writers/artists don't demand anything from me, I won't demand anything from them.

If they just write out of love of writing/crafting a story, then they can drop it, give it a shit ending, whatever, and I won't say a word.

BUT...if they start demanding reviews to continue or a certain level of feedback (such as this many kudos or whatever) and then stop updating then...yeah...I think that's bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But sometimes authors really want/plan to continue it when they can.

I, at least, recently finished a fic after an 8 years hiatus.
During that time I wrote for other fandoms, but as soon as I could get back in the original fandom I focused on finishing because I really wanted to, but I was burned out of the fandom and needed a (long) rest.

Love it when someone doesn't like what I like/agree with me is shitting all over it.

I'd choose the surname "Obvious" then enter the military and reach the rank of Captain so that everyone would have to address me as Captain Obvious.

I like my Norwegian last name, it sounds and looks cool imo. But I am pretty sure it's a "peasant" name - assuming most names that refer to a physical location (a la "Underhill") or a career ("Baker", "Smith", etc) are "peasant names". I think it'd be cool to have a name I could trace because the family was maybe more influential and had records. I'm not saying I want to be a princess or something, just I'm interested in tracing my family and am so jealous of the select few who can go further back than two or three hundred years.

I Google for images and filter the results by size to get a large enough image, then use an online editor like picmonkey.com, lunapic.com or picfont.com. You can upload a pic then crop, resize, add text or a whole bunch of other things.

These comments aren't even very harsh tho.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but then...don't leave notes on the fic itself maybe?

Like, I get putting them in your profile or something. But when you update a fic with yet another note about how you're working on it, I can't help but feel like you're jerking your readership around.

I can understand if you're ALMOST done with a chapter and you put up a note to alert the readership of a long dead fic that there's new stuff coming.

But when it becomes one update after another that's just another note, I do tend to feel strung along.

I'm skeptical that a domestic ferret would survive for more than three hours if loosed in the countryside. And my family had chickens, so things such as weasels are already a threat. I can't imagine ferrets impacting the threat level to keeping chickens at all. I also don't believe that's ever been the reasoning, I'm pretty sure it's native wildlife that's the bigger concern (such as birds). But I also don't see a domestic ferret having much luck against anything more than mice, frogs, and bugs.

Something that isn't also a common boy's/girl's name. Something that isn't a common first name in general. Something that SOUNDS more like a last name.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You're assuming the author is stringing you along on purpose, which seems like a stretch. Lots of people mean to finish a fic but find that they have a lot of other distractions both in real life and in the form of shiny new fandoms. They're not necessarily leaving the fic hanging just to mess with you or deceive you, you know.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I resented this movie because they made the cat a bad guy. I was very passionate about cats as a child.

Actually, I still don't like it when movies make cats the bad guy lol

Agreeeed sfm and I work at a vet hospital and all but one agree as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think a dead fic is stringing people along. But when you update your fic and it's (yet again) a note saying that the author hasn't abandoned it, well, it gets frustrating.

You can't put that stuff in your profile?

Because when I get a notice that a fic's been updated, I tend to believe that it's going to be content and it's really disappointing when it's just (yet again) a message saying that new stuff is coming. And, a lot of times when this happens, the new stuff NEVER comes.
