There's no such thing as free.

Here, I'll break down the examples you gave:

In order to get to a library, you need some sort of transportation. That costs money -- either a car you have to pay for (gas, fees, maintenance, as well as the cost of the car itself) or public transportation (fares.) If you're lucky, you might live within walking distance. Most people aren't lucky.

Youtube and podcasts? Sure, if you have the internet. But the internet costs money. If you don't have it at home, then you have to go to the library, and then we have the previous example.

How about this -- what if you don't own the movie but you're watching it at a friend's house? What if they own the movie and invited you over to watch? Does that still not make you a fan?

I think the question of whether or not it's ethical to pirate is different from whether or not doing it keeps you from being a fan. If a person enjoys the material and talks about it in the fandom and creates or consumes fanart and fanfiction, how are they not a fan? Are fans obligated to do what's best for the creators? What about people who separate the art and the creator when it comes to people that they don't respect? Is someone who can't stand Orson Scott Card's positions but loves his books not a fan of the books?

Corn Pops.
Also, imitation Sugar Smacks. You get some fortified wheat puffs and spoon some honey on them and stir. Milk optional.
Muesli and Cheerios are great too.

I half-agree with you. I believe the current system is exploitative, because we have no real systems in place to counteract that exploitation. We need some sort of social safety net to keep people from falling through the cracks, and the one we have now just doesn't cut it. A living wage would go a long way towards equalizing the playing field.

All I'm seeing in this comment is people should not be allowed a little fun if they can't afford it. Enjoy your dirt and rocks, poor kids!

Agreed. Cracking groups for years have admonished torrenters with messages like "If you like it, buy it, or they won't make any more!" And it's a true statement.

Used to do it all the time, stopped entirely during my fundie phase because stealing, and now I do it occasionally when it's nearly impossible to find something legally.

Probably that one that also says, "If you bf/gf wants to spend hours not in your presence, THEY ARE TERRIBLE!"

I still like to think that the Aliens, Predator, Blade Runner and Avatar (the cat people one) universes are all one and the same.

That is the weirdest part. I'm guessing one of them was deployed overseas, incarcerated, or in a coma.

Crap, maybe his girlfriend is an ex-con, a violent felon, a member of a tough girl street gang. Maybe she's really scary.

Nah.

I tried to start playing it and I got so infinitely bored by the setting and the characters, it was written so incredibly dull.

So colour me surprised. I didn't even get to the gay sex.

I'm a fan of Doctor Who. I don't want to wait for it to come on tv (which has no ads and no one knows I'm watching, if a stone falls in the forest can anyone hear it?). I'm also poor. I cannot see the material harm and see the material benefit in torrenting something that makes me happy THAT I COULD NEVER PAY MONEY FOR ANYWAY.

Your moral scruples are bourgeois luxuries.

Well, according to Tumblr (I know...) that definition is wrong, but you should still be ashamed of using it because it's AAVE that's been appropriated to mean something it doesn't.

It was my first yaoi game too! I haven't played another but I wouldn't necessarily be against it.

Yea, fuck Mink; I read up on the other characters and endings after beating the game with sexy samurai hairdresser and that's where all the "no" came from, lol. There was disturbing stuff in every path but of course not even remotely as much with the good endings. (Still...all the rape or attempted rape turned me off of it.)

Yeah, it sure sounds like she's trying to force him to dump her or planning to dump him.

Or, you know, there could be other factors. This feels like one of those long-term relationships where one half was away for a long time.

Peanut Butter Crunch. Everything else GTFO.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not really...I do think watching them with slash goggles is kind of overly easy, but the slash fic is not the uncomplicated easy boring type -- it's really creative and intricate and really gets incorporates the period attitudes about homosexuality really well, and does the "but he thinks of me as a twin brother, there's no way I can risk our friendship by confessing my feelings" tropes REALLY well, so I'd be very happy with it if that was my thing.

It's just...that stuff is apparently not my thing in Starsky and Hutch fandom, because I seem to be totally distracted by other things like "how did they get to know each other so well they can do that psychic thing, and understand what the other is really saying under BS teasing" and "how do they relate to other people when they're so inseparable" and "what were their backstories like" and "how do they trust each other so much they can be so openly affectionate because whoa they're cops in the 1970s, tough guys weren't supposed to act like that" and "more hurt/comfort in more variety pleeeeeaaaaase." The romance just feels sort of superfluous, even when it's well-done.

I recently read a book about the last days of the romanovs, and I don't think I could rematch this movie now, even though I did really like some of the songs.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Re watch, not rematch.

Media Pet Peeves

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-08-21 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
What are some media pet peeves you have? It can be tropes, character types, production processes, publicity processes, etc.

I was watching X-Files and one scene had Mulder looking for a character in a building. He wasn't trying to be sneaky about it but for some reason he was walking through this darkened building without turning on the lights! And then the other guy (who worked there) was also wandering around in the dark.

And I realized how annoying of a trope that is. Normal people don't just wander around a dark building looking for someone (unless they are being sneaky). They call out for them or turn on lights.
