56. I LOVE YOU. That video was what got me into them too (well, that and realizing that Jared Leto played Hephaestion. XD). I'll be glad to help you on your way into fandom, while avoiding the craziness.
But a word to the wise, "bandom" (meaning the stuff most people mean when they refer to it, which is the Fall Out Boy/PatD side of things) is really not the place to look for 30STM stuff. I'm a huge 30STM fan, and most of the reason I left bandom is because it's not only full of the crazy, insane fans you mentioned, and teenyboppers who can't type for shit, it's also full of people (including a lot of the BNFs) who do nothing but bash them, just because apparently they think Jared is a douche (which is, by the way, not true at all, he was a sweetheart when I met him). All I wanted was good fic. -_-;
If you want good stuff, the 30STM communities are a good place to start. 30secondstomars is good for general band info, 30stm_picspam for all the pictures you could EVER WANT, and 30stm_slash is generally a good fic community with a refreshingly low amount of wank. As for author recs, felinemuse is one of my favorites in the fandom, and I believe she has written Jared/doppleganger!Jared once upon a time.
