Some people seem to be misunderstanding this one... The secret is not about name-smushes in general, but ones where a character's official (or more well-known) name is disregarded in favor of the Japanese name/pronunciation.

Example:
AkuRoku vs. Axel/Roxas
NaruMitsu vs. Phoenix/Edgeworth

If they were against name-smushes in general, EdgeWright probably would've been up there. :|

I hate name-smushes in all fandoms except ones were all/most of the characters have Japanese names, since you can divide the syllables more easily. Otherwise it's like learning a new language when you go looking for fanfic.
