People are idiots for the most part and will believe any pablum you spoon feed them if they think it fits into their narrow view of the world.

Adam Sandler, though not sure it's entirely irrational.
badass_tiger: Charles Dance as Lord Vetinari (Tyrant)

No I haven't read that from Tolkien. I think he's a bit overrated - or at least, his books didn't interest me particularly, but Roverandom sounds different and interesting so I'll see what I think of it, thanks!

Ofc, Pterry has written wonderful everything, although on the subject of his books for younger audiences, I probably wouldn't have read the Tiffany Aching series if it weren't for the fact that he wrote them. They're good, but I just didn't like them. I love Johnny Maxwell though, it's thanks to those books that I once nearly walked into a pole while I was engrossed in reading it.

Taylor Swift, kinda. Dislike is a strong word, but I get the bad vibes from her.

AYRT - Hm, maybe. Not so big on teen dramas though.

I can't give something specific, though you might want to check out Wikipedia's list of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_space_opera_media>space opera</a>. The father of the genre is E.E. Doc Smith's Lensman series, so it might be worth checking that out.

I like The Good Wife, Political Animals, West Wing, and Southland. I'd just like a TV (political) drama show that's not completely unrealistic (NCIS, I'm looking at you!) but also has a good story and/or intriguing characters.

Like, I've seen the pilot of Madame Secretary, but that seems to much like Very Special Maverick Outsider Saves The Day By Being A Maverick Outsider And Very Special Also CONSPIRACY!!!111! to me. I went through that with Scandal and I don't think I'm ready to do it again. I loved the first episodes of Scandal. :(

Wasn't the arrogance kind of the point, though? I mean... Mr. Darcy is reserved (not so much shy, per se), but combined with his pride it comes off to everyone else as arrogance. The misinterpretation of his character and realization of his true character is a (arguably the) major plot point.

Re: Boycotting dead writers.

As someone who got into Lovecraft in my early 20s I'm very, very aware of his xenophobia. It's honestly worse in his earlier writings, which is irritating because his early stories are otherwise superior to his later work.

I don't really read his stories anymore mostly because I've read many of them several times -- The Colour Out of Space is a personal favorite -- but also partly because of the undercurrent of racism and sexism that's shot throughout his work. But I wouldn't boycott the man or tell others not to read him (though I'd give them warnings as to what to expect) largely because I feel that while he wasn't a particularly good writer, he was an important one, and the ideas that he presented, as well as the mythos he created, have moved beyond their roots and become very much a part of the cultural fabric, particularly once he was rediscovered in the 60s. Lovecraftian concepts color everything from Amnesia to Alien, and there are certain tropes that are very, very common in sci-fi nowadays that have roots in Lovecraft.

I also don't believe in refusing to enjoy things that are problematic, because then you might as well watch the linoleum curl for entertainment. The trick is to go in knowing what's problematic about it or being able to spot problematic elements and being able to enjoy a work anyway. Though of course sometimes it's difficult to do that when the work is clearly colored by unpleasant views or ideas, so unless you're a pure film buff, there's no reason to watch, for example, Birth of a Nation unless you have an interest in seeing its pioneering camera work and artistic techniques.

Nuts to that. I was recently subjected to Magic Mike and he was the only good part of the movie.

C.S. Harris, the Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries. It's got a mystery-solving viscount set in the Regency era.

Depending on how vocal they are, though, they can still make the fandom a place that non-rabid people want to avoid.

In regards to Lara Croft, to me, it's because the devs schizophrenically try to play her as "damaged" and "traumatized" about what she's done but when she's actually fighting, it's clear that she's sociopathicly enjoying the hell out of it.
