Oh agreed, shoving it in peoples faces and expecting them to like it isn't cool and most people understandably wont respond well to that.

It's times like this where I miss specific communities because then you could have gen and shippy comms neatly divided, not that two can't co-exist but it helped to keep conversations on track for the content of the comm, which was nice. Though the free-for-all comms were a bit of a mess imo and often devolved into stupid arguments.

But with fandom how it is now that doesn't really work anymore, everything's more of a grab-bag and since shippy stuff has always been a bit more prevalent it must feel like that's all there is sometimes.

I'll happily chat gen or ships with people, I have to be nudged into the gen a bit more as I tend to default to shippy but I enjoy speculating about the canon just as much when I get into it.

And when you put salad dressing on it it goes from being bland and tasteless to being bland, tasteless, AND soggy!

That is why lettuce is the worst.

I find both moe and the boobie/pantie thing to be just really distracting? It's just such a ridiculous moment when it happens, because they contortions the character's body goes through to show her panties or how her boobs suddenly act like balloons looks so WEIRD that it takes me out of the story (not to mention that I always wince - I have big boobs and that would freaking hurt, especially without a bra).

That said, if it's an anime that was basically 'made' for moments like that (Agent Aika for example), I don't mind as much.
But then you have the first episode of K Return of Kings turn a character (Seri) into a wobbly boobie joke and I go ??? Yes, there was always a bit of fanservice with her and Neko too (who her not being fully human or whatever somehow made me not mind as much), but that shit was just really really terrible. I just can't see it as sexy when it just looks so ridiculous.
It's gotten a wee bit better now as the season progresses, but her skirt is still getting shorter and shorter and the first thing we see of her are her boobs. Guess I have to live with that.

Me too. She's probably a perfectly nice person, but I get backstabber vibes from her.

Fucking monsters, because that's what they are.

Pronounced "DOUCHEBAGS".

Re: Westerns with slashy subtext

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Try Spaghetti Westerns. The Lee Van Cleef film "Beyond the Law" comes to mind. It has been a while, but I distinctly recall joking that the main characters were husbands because their relationship was a bit slashy. (This is where I also recommend "The Big Gundown" - also Lee Van Cleef - even though it's not very slashy. It does have a great... um, femdom character. Well, she's more of a sexual sadist. But, yeah. Weird and fun scene. You could slash the main characters, though, pretty easily.)

The student can't eat by mouth, so she has a g-tube feeding every couple of hours. The nurse puts her food in a bag, hangs it on a pole, and connects the bag to the g-tube with a cord. During this time, the student has to sit in one place for an hour until her feeding is over and then sit an additional twenty minutes because if she gets up and runs around, she'll throw up.

Cinema Sins is just tongue-in-cheek enough that it doesn't bother me, but I do lose patience with hate watchers.

Yay for the bar application! I imagine you're happiest about that, but as I have been suffering writer's block forever, I'm giving you a vicarious double-yay for finishing a fic chapter. It's a good feeling, isn't it? :)

Considering I too have had massive writers block for weeks, at least on that chapter and the one that will follow, I appreciate the double-yay. I'm really happy I got it finished, finally. And I've had a couple positive reviews so far, so I'm feeling good about it.

I think it depends on how big the fandom is. The bigger the fandom, the more likely there is a silent majority. However, in a small fandom that's dominated by one juggernaut ship, it definitely stands out.

Fallout fandom, for instance, definitely has this problem.

See, that's the thing... I'm not sure she is a nice person. If I had to choose one celebrity that I thought had sociopathic tendencies, it would be her no question.

Well that escalated quickly.

No! NO! It's Gene Hackman!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
He's amazing in North and South! But... I still would like to see Armitage play Mr. Darcy because I'm just that greedy. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Have to disagree. The tone of the miniseries is far more restrained, because manners and outward behavior was more restrained. That doesn't make it lifeless, just far more subtle than dudes standing in the rain going "I love love love youuuuuu"... which doesn't sound the least bit natural to me. The 2005 adaptation just sounds like a super cheesey romance, so hyperbolic it could almost be parody.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Tbh, it's been 20+ years since I read the book, but I seem to recall Darcy's character written such that you can see both traits equally in him..."

Overall, yes, we come to see both the good and bad sides of Darcy's personality. But initially, no. At that first dance where he makes his appearance, he definitely comes off like an ass because it is impolite to show up and than refuse to dance and there isn't really any positive side to implying that no girls here at pretty or classy enough to be your partner.

The idea of Darcy cringing with secondhand embarrassment is almost sweet, but that doesn't make sense in the context of the story. The younger Bennet girls' behavior isn't just gauche, it borders on impropriety because they're young, unmarried girls who are flirting heavily with officers. By modern standards, that's nothing. But back then, anything that hinted you might have loose morals was a huge thing, not just for you but for your whole family. Lydia's flirtations don't just imply she might be so loose she's unmarriageable, it also drags down her sisters' reputations and chances at marriage (and financial security and happiness), too. THAT'S why her behavior is such a huge deal.

And Darcy knows all of that because of what happened with Georgiana, and he knows exactly what damage to a young woman's reputation can result. So when he reacts to the younger Bennet girls, it's not just because they're tacky and poorly behaved, it's because of the larger implications that go beyond snobbery. He has a family name (and his beloved younger sister) to protect, so getting involved with a family of loose moraled daughters has pretty serious implications. He is (or should be) waaaay more than just slightly uncomfortable or embarrassed, because the Bennets' actions raise big ol' red flags by the standards of the time.

at least the character pictured doesn't look like she's in kindergarten.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I don't think they were really trying to do a proper remake of P&P, because they knew the miniseries had done that. The 2005 version was written to be a more generic romance. Look at how much of Austen's dialogue was stripped completely or rewritten to sound "modern". I wouldn't even call myself a huge Austen fan, but it sounds gratingly anachronistic to me and lacks the novel's voice and style. It came off as very dumbed down, IMO, and that's really unfortunate.
