I see your oversimplification of mental disorders as FAR more offensive than oversimplifying characters can ever be. It doesn't make a character's struggles cheaper if they have a mental disorder, because people with mental disorders have problems and hardships that are very real and very painful, derived both from their disorder and elsewhere. And it's not like going to a shrink and popping pills magically makes things better. It's very hard to recover from the depths of mental illness, even when aided by psychiatrists and medicine. I know second hand, I have relatives with bipolar who had serious trouble piecing their lives back together, and are still struggling months and even years after their diagnosis. You're right about not everything being that easy because MENTAL DISORDER ITSELF isn't that easy, and anyone who pretends it is is insulting real humans with those disorders far more than they are insulting fictional characters.
