The mental maturity difference I was talking about in regards to season 1 is what I perceive to be a tonal shift in the show. Season 1 Steven is like a typical western cartoon boy protagonist--dumb, innocent, impulsive--where later seasons gave him a more refined characterization after the show started elaborating the story.
