For the most part, I can just roll my eyes at most fanservice, and if the character in question seems like some thought and effort went into their personality, I don't worry too much about it. But I'm with you on the vacant smiles I see on a lot of anime girls-- it drives me absolutely nuts every time I see it and turns me off the series completely. Do I wish there was less fanservice in my favorite shonen series? Absolutely. But I can live with it as long as there looks like someone's home upstairs, at least.
