OP, putting on my serious face.

They do have a purpose, of course. Like when the POV character doesn't know another character's name. Or for humour. Or to express a hatred so unfathomable the narrator doesn't want to refer to them by name. But that's not what's happening in most fanfiction.

A lot of new writers seem to get the impression that for writing to be good it has to have every long word and fancy descriptor they can think of heaped into their prose.

And of course said-bookisms are fine in the right place at the right time too. But, again, that's not what I was criticising. Obviously anything can work when the writer's skilled enough.
