It's not really the same, since most gay characters are explicitly written as gay -- they talk about being gay -- while most straight characters are only implicitly written as straight -- they are shown only dating opposite sex characters, but same-sex relationships are not explicitly ruled out, and obviously (shown) dating only opposite sex =/= attracted only to opposite sex.
