101. Agreed times a million. I cried like whoa.

108. Me too! But I do that with any rpg where you can name the characters.

What was the first silent movie you ever saw? I know it can be hard to remember...

Mine was Wild Orchids with Garbo, back in 1988. :D I devoured every silent I could find, even all the blurry, Library of Congress paper prints of the old Biograph movies from 1905-1910. Loved loved LOVED them! To this day I still madly crush on Robert Harron and the other fellows in D. W. Griffith's old stock company of players. *le sigh*

Dude, you were a VERY important friend to me, and... well, of course I'd remember her. How could I not? She was important to you.

But how are the female characters getting shafted? In Bug's Life, okay, maybe, but other female Pixar characters are a strong, driven woman that clawed into an incredibly tough business that women traditionally aren't a part of (Ratatouille), a goofy character that none-the-less manages to get the main character through HALF of the things he goes through the movie (Finding Nemo--I don't think Marlin would've made it without Dory). What if the genders were switched?

Ratatouille: A clumsy, nervous, self-concious female dishwasher pretends to be able to cook when she needs the help of a rat to really do it. She falls for the hard-working, jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold chef who has nobody's help to get to where he was, and in fact had to beat the odds to become a chef. When she inherits her father's business, she's hopelessly out of her element and leans on her boyfriend and rat friend to help her keep afloat.

It would've been worse if Linguini was a girl, don't you think? Remy being a girl would've been fine, but then...she would've been a chef, right? A woman who wants to cook food! Groundbreaking! Of course, there's the fact that women as chefs in that sort of fancy restaurant is rare, so in that sense it WOULD be groundbreaking--but he's already a rat, already has a difficult time breaking into the career he wants. Colette being a separate character to show how women also have a difficult time breaking into that business worked better.

How is Colette (or the female cast members of The Incredibles, or Dory, even) not a strong character? How are these bad roles for female characters to have? Are we REALLY going to whine about the fact that the female characters don't get a bunch of spotlights shining down on them all the time? That's not equality. That's filling a quota to make people happy. I'd rather see female characters fall naturally into roles rather then pull out a stopwatch and compare how much screen time they have, personally.

This just adds to my theory that people who liked Rose in S1 but hated her in S2 are just jealous fangirls who're annoyed that she got close to Ten because David Tennant is just that hot.

But keeping on topic, Pixar does not omit strong female characters at all from it's stories so ummm...?

Re: 129

[identity profile] triestine.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll take your word for it because I don't know which animated films are Pixar's, which are by Dreamworks, etc.; I was just replying to the general statement above.

It makes more sense now that you've clarified. The line I quoted in my first comment to you wasn't specific enough, since secret 129 doesn't actually mention toys or merchandising.

CAN I ADD YOU SO WE CAN OCCASIONALLY FAG ABOUT LAYTON OR SOMETHING

115. I didn't see it because I was too afraid it'd be like looking into a mirror to the future or something, but without the romance and comedy bits. D:

130. Whatever helps quell cravings, right? I know that's what inspires me.

132. I've thought like that for YEARS. I can't help feeling guilty, because I know the feeling of being genuinely in trouble and needing help, but at the same time? A silhouette slowly waving its arms in front of a CAUTION sign at 2 AM when a Wal-Mart is less than a mile away and the car next to it is mysteriously full of people-shaped shadows, NONE of which are trying to get my attention too? Yeah no.

133. YOU. I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND. THAT IS SO AWESOMELY NERDY /kKHGVCYRSY5RTYUI7U8IK;LK ♥ Angry Beavers needs moar love ;A;

139. I'm fond of plants (http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l229/PsychoVirgin/fuhflowerxLwhat.jpg) myself. As long as there isn't any disturbing mpreg involved AS IN SOME FANART. *shudders*

Re: 129

[identity profile] obnoxdwfanbrat.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Wel, it's a natural outcome of the way boys and girls are socialized. Girls are socialized to identify with everyone, and they're taught that it's acceptable to try on male roles. It's only when they refuse to give up those male roles after trying them that they're punished. Boys are typically not taught with a focus on understanding and identifying with others, and they're punished harshly for trying on female roles.

Also, there's considerable writing about this in the analysis of slasher films. The reason the protagonist is almost always female is so male viewers can separate themselves from the fear and weakness she goes through... and she's always masculinized in the end by getting a knife. Also, consider the rules scream lays down: i.e. she has to be a virgin. What does that tell you?

#163 - I once ran into someone at a con who asked, I thought, if I liked yowie. I just stared at him. It wasn't until about three hours later that I realised what he'd been trying to ask. |D; So, ditto! XD
