I never found the appeal behind Mikimoto's design myself
Because people look more realistic and more like real human beings as opposed to plush dolls. Same reason why I like Yas so much. I don't see his designs as being stiff either. I feel more emotion conveyed in his designs than someone who draws a more plain and cartoony style. I cried buckets during the final scene of Gundam 0080 partly because when I looked at Al's face I saw a child crying, and not a drawing representative of a child.
