By that logic, then that means Aerith got in the way of Cloud/Tifa for me. And, really, she didn't; if anything, she brought them together. I used to ship Cloud/Aerith, hated Tifa, thought she got in the way of that pairing, blah blah blah. But I was fourteen and by all means completely irrational. Gave it a couple years, grew up a little, decided Tifa was my favorite character (with Aerith a close second), began shipping Cloud/Tifa, though I have a tiny bit of a soft spot left for Cloud/Aerith as well.
...Point is, you can have your ships and like other characters, too. Stop looking at them as "GETTING IN THE WAY!!!" and try to find other things you like about them. The way I saw it, when I'd begun liking Tifa (and was making the transition to Cloud/Tifa shipper), I saw Tifa as his friend who clung so desperately to him because he was all she had left of Nibelheim.
