I didn't expect anything when I started watching, but if Haruhi had turned out to be a girly girl instead of the gender blind, anti-mary sue that she is, I'm sure I would have found the reveal to be annoying. But I'm glad you could move beyond it and just like couples for what they are, which I think is like the second evolutionary stage of the yaoi fangirl.
