Firstly there's probably a reason that they're really popular... maybe because they're really good?

They're popular because a focus group decided that they would be more likely to sell merchandise and/or products to an adolescent American audience, therefore they were shown on American tv. It's not like American companies choose the best anime to market to Americans, just what they think will sell better.
