You're the second person I've heard espouse the theory that despite his incredible charm, charisma, good looks and 51st Century Pheremones, Capt. Jack is NOT really a hero to the British audience for those exactly reasons.
I have no way of knowing if it's true or not, but if it is, it's fascinating. However I think for most of them (especially given what we know of his saviour complex and them buying into it) it's a mixture of hero worship and pheremones. (Since I assume he has shagged Susie and Owen and will shag Gwen as soon as he gets a clear shot. Tosh would shag him in a heart-beat, but has somehow been deemed not gorgeous enough.)
