I mean, years into your future, the memory of meeting your spouse for the first time will be so much more important than if your otp hooked up in canon. Still, do what makes you happy now. Just tell your friends you aren't interested. Your friends probably won't understand, but I doubt it'll cause any serious riffs between you and your friends. If anything they'll just keep bugging you about it.
