Nothing is wrong with loving the pairing. GL was also originally supposed to have 50 episodes, but Gainax decided to do less. I think GL was pretty much perfectly put together, but I don't have much emotional pull towards it because it's so plot based. In that respect, I think every romance "suffered".

Not Secret 3:

BULLSHIT. Gundam SEED is the most piece of trite show I've ever seen in my whole fucking life. And I HATED those other pieces of shit. Fuck that shit man. The PERFECT PEACE that turns out JUST GREAT! And ALL THE HAPPY ENDINGS are worse than TWILIGHT. Lacus is a Mary Sue, Cagalli is a stereotype, Athrun is a wuss, and Kira is an even bigger wuss. Also, HUR HUR I AM A COORDINATOR WHO HAS NOT BEEN TRAINED IN THIS KINDSA SHIT but of course, I can take on 4 other coordinators who have been. Because I'm a coordinator. COORDINATOOOR

she hesitates to kill her father in episode 15

When I rewatched, I interpreted this as her seeing her last chance at being validated as a person in the way she'd originally hoped for being destroyed. That she then got up and went back to Simon instead of just...letting herself fall over the edge too says a lot about her strength.

I will agree that Nia wasn't given much screentime in the second half of the show, which I found disappointing. But all the emphasis given to her character in the last episode made me forgive that a little.

I really, really hope they deliver with the Simon/Nia story in the second movie. I mean, they gave Yoko the first because she had little screen-time in the second arc... right?

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
107. Flawless? If she didn't have that power, she couldn't help Mytho. She a bad dancer and klutz in everything else. A Mary Sue is someone with unnatural poise and grace that doesn't need magic to do that. Hell, even Ahiru struggled with the issue that Mytho loved Princess Tutu and not her. Hell, even her friends didn't have a high opinion of her despite they care for her (one of them practically gets off her failures). She had to win respect from Fakir because they were fighting for the same person, Mytho, and wanted to overcome their assigned roles and Rue didn't like her until the end either. In fact, you can see her pretty selfish in wanted to give Mytho his heart back no matter what. And being self-sacrificing is not a Sue trait, making other sacrificing for you is more of a Sue trait. Seriously, learn what a Mary Sue is.

109. ಠ_ಠ

119. As a yuri/femslash fan and a girl, LOL okay. I didn't know I can be "more gay" than some people.

121. I don't know I would call Sora a girly-girl, but whatever. I think the hate stems that the girly girl tends to be useless character, the damsel-in-distress. Certainly there are girly girls who are very strong characters, but they get buried by the ones that encoruage the stereotype.

122. I used to too, a long time ago. Oh god, need to listen to it again.

142. Why, they are different takes of sequential arts... well, manga is. Not all countries call their comics "comics" either. There's nothing wrong of categorizing art because that what they do in art.

144. Did she snap his neck and is that Tony Danza? Sorry for being off topic....

152. Ugh, what did he do to this hair. I miss this show...

155. Ooo, Case, that was bad. OP, honestly, talk to a counselor if you having problems, don't keep it in.

162. This secret is so cute, is that your dog? So cute.....

164. I doubt Light would have less problem without her. In fact, he would've failed otherwise. And depending on which Misa you're talking about. If it's Misa with her memories intact, I always had the feeling she would betray him if he screwed her over, without her memories though, she would even dare.

Nia is not the type of person to ever be in a personal struggle against someone, actually.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
HE'S NOT JUST A COORDINATOR BUT A SUPER COORDINATOR, BB!

Re: 128 and 160

128: Batshit shippers are everywhere. Zutara just has a disproportionate number of lunatics that have so shame. Or are just batshit. Whatever.
And it's a fucking CAPS_LOCK journal, hello!/goodbye!! sanity.

160: The fatmai thing is stupid.
Batshit shippers have taken a poorly executed attempt at a secondary character's character, and lost points on fucking it up (though you can't blame them, even the 'creators' didn't give any reason/sense to it, and made the character 'shallow by neglect').

I'm still astounded at the amount of 'romance' in a 7+ cartoon.

122. I love that movie too.

I can understand that. I just wanted you to know that those of us who are fans of the pairing do have legitimate reasons for loving it.

I'm happy we were able to discuss this civilly. :)

Exactly.

Re: The rage is strong with me today

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Having been following these threads, I'm just going to observe here that it's possible, as I do, to acknowledge that the show could have done more to develop Nia, but still love what is done with her.

I have issues with the way Gurren Lagann handles its female characters (yes, Yoko too). I essentially agree with everything [livejournal.com profile] csakuras and [livejournal.com profile] 7thisgod are saying about Nia's development--I think it was there if you look hard enough--but I am disappointed that so much of it was subtext, whereas so much of a lot of the rest of the cast's development was text. I understand why other people would find her less interesting than some characters, but I don't think she's less complex...just somewhat mishandled. I hold out hope that the second movie will give Nia some actual action and screentime towards the end, so we can see her own thoughts and decisions instead of having to guess at them, but that won't fix the flaws of the original show.

Also, while Simon/Nia may be too "perfect" for your tastes, I like it a lot because I feel like it justifies its perfection (as well as appealing to my fondness for certain types of connections between characters). We're not told "Simon and Nia are ridiculously good for each other," we're shown it. You may prefer more conflict in your pairings (and I usually do too), but Simon/Nia appeals to the part of me that likes really big, epic love that's also just plain cute.

I find it interesting that you assume the OP is talking about a CAPS_LOCK journal. Couldn't s/he just be venting about the fandom in general?

N!S

(Anonymous) 2008-10-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt Gundam had that much of a impact on anime as a whole, but space opera as a subgenre.

And I think it sucks pretty much, but it's certainly better than SEED. Hell, all Gundams, except maybe SD Gundam, are better than the SEED saga. It was a total wreck from the first series. Destiny was... ugh personified.

(Thank you! I enjoy doing them as a Friday pick-me-up! :D)

BAH, I'm gonna do it, what the heck. I'm already knee-deep in SNL dorkdom anyway.

WHat is a good name... hmm.

Re: OP of 117

[identity profile] musouka-manga.livejournal.com 2008-10-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Episode 10 framed it more between Youko and Nia than Nia and Simon. Likewise, Simon's pain at the end isn't because of anything Nia did, but because of his unresolved "aniki" issues. Nia is presenting an alternate perspective, but it's not creating a clash between her and Simon. And then you have the fact that I'd hesitate to call their relationship "love" at this point in time.

The proposal was more like culture clash. Once Nia understood the concept, she was perfectly willing to accept his proposal. It wasn't an issue that came about because of their love, but Nia's imperfect understanding of customs.

Re: The rage is strong with me today

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-10-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I personally, in terms of Nia-content, find it reassuring that Maasahiko Ootsuka is credited as director for both Gurren-Lagann movies. Not only is Nia his favorite character, he was already in charge of 4 of the 6 major Nia episodes. (9, 15, 17, 27)

We'll know tomorrow, I guess.

152 Erik Per Sullivan!

I totally didn't recognize him on Boston Legal, I thought he might have been the kid from Pickett Fences, but I was off by a few years.
