Egads, anon. You don't even know what she means by "conservative". These days, it doesn't automatically translate into being homophobic or voting republican. You can't even define the rift by economics or politics, because plenty of right-wingers think the bailout's a lousy idea, and that Bush is doing a miserable job. Take your frustrations out on the people who deserve it, because at a grassroots level, we need to look for common ground. The government is doing a lot of terrible things that the American people don't agree with. But we can only stop them if we get past our own self-righteousness, and the mistaken impression that people have to agree on most everything in order to join forces and work together.

For the sake of an alternative perspective -

I hate the heterosexual coupling-off of every character and their fictional sister in the epilogue and the post-DH interviews because of the way they close down the potential for canon-compliant shipping which is not the heterosexual marriage model.

I'm gay. God knows, there are few enough gay characters in our fiction even still. So those of us who aren't het are obliged to work outside the box and identify with the characters we think might potentially be like us.

I'd argue that one of the reasons HP is so damn huge a fandom is because JKR created so many characters with which people can identify. Everyone in fandom's got their own favourite character[s] onto whom they project their fantasies. For those of us who are queer, those fantasies aren't one twu hetero love. So it's damn frustrating - in a text where we've found so many gaps where we can read against the grain and see the characters as family - to suddenly have all those avenues shut down by an epidemic of mandatory heterosexuality, much of which seems enormously gratuitous.

What a wonderful display of tolerance of views that don't agree with your own views.

Some school districts offer more than just French and Spanish. Mine offered Latin and another that I'm drawing a blank on. My niece who is in high school now also had Russian (which she was in for a while) and Japanese. Mandarin is actually becoming more commonly taught in schools. It is entirely dependent on the locality, since they are not federally mandated. It's unfortunate to generalize all Americans and all american schools based on a handful.

My problem with Kazuma is I can somehow never make him taller in my head so when I think to myself "Kinta/Kazuma would be pretty cool." I always see them the same heights they are now and that seems just wrong somehow! :) If I could just stretch him in my head ...

Haven't they always been shipped?! I remember when I was a kid always seeing them together cause one had a magic cane, and the other could move though time. Me and my friends have been shipping them for years!

Agreed, it's more than silly, it puts Americans at a distinct disadvantage, imo.

The reason I purported First Grade versus the Third is because scientific studies agree that the human brain learns language almost effortlessly around age two. I think you're friend's children are a perfect example of what kids can do given the right stimulation at the proper age.

Having said that, I deplore the cookie-cutter method of the education system. I suppose I should say locally (as anon below has so noted). The fact is that America doesn't budget enough money into Education, and recently Schools have had to cut back on their Art Programs and such.

Back to the point. Should some children be initially unable to sort out being taught bilingually, I'd love to see them given extra time and help until they catch on because I believe that much, much more often than not, children can learn.

ETA: Sorry for any confusion regarding my first icon there. It was supposed to portray my disgust at the American School System in general).

With all due respect, Anon, I think you may have missed the point of my comment.

If there is a district where languages other than English are compulsory in Elementary school, then please relieve me of my ignorance. The fact that it isn't Federally mandated for American students to learn a second language was the main statement I made.

Thank you; however, for clarifying (perhaps for others?) that districts is synonymous with localities in this context.
